So I posted a thread here about 6 months ago showing off my network. I've now decided to do a full out renovation on the network and move away from the loud server rack located in my living area to a wall mount 12U fully enclosed panel.
I had Fluke Networks here to demo the Fluke CableIQ and it turns out my cheap-o Cat5e cable I bought off ebay doesn't quite meet par. So I've had a box of Cat6eX (yes eX) sitting on the back shelf for a while. So I've decided to just redo the full network. These are the first pictures and it'll be a while until I have further updates as I'm going to Maine for a week and a half. But figured I'd post up a start.

Well I don't require the use of 10gig rated copper (6eX). But I worked at a production house here in Boston that under went a whole renovation and so I got all the remaining data cabling. So I figure why not use it as it's been sitting in a box on my storage shelf for a few months now.
However the other hardware (gigabit, phone server, NAS Storage). I also do freelance productions. So I need something with high throughput and reliability. I use to have my whole area filled with tools, equipment, servers. However as I'm trying to grow into a more professional environment and pickup bigger clients, even though I'm still run out of my house I want it to have that much closer of a look of a professional environment.
So one of the things I'm doing is getting either some screening room style seats, or a bigger leather / pleather couch for the big screen TV and installing a whole new sound system. I've got a 42" Pro Plasma from Pioneer on the wall that i'm going to feed a direct HDMI feed from my editing system via an HDMI Baluns so I can screen projects to clients.
As for the other half of the reason, I figure why not I've got almost all the gear as it is aside from the wall rack. So why not make it all clean and organized. It'll be great for media streaming for personal use and such.
Here's some more pictures, the white wall where the drops come down will be ripped out as it was never completed, new structure will be added behind to support the wall cabinet and then resheetrocked. -- Edrick Smith Independent Film & Broadcast Producer »edricksmith.com |

|
EdrickI aspire to tell the story of a lifetimePremium join:2004-09-11 Woburn, MA | reply to Edrick I've got an assortment of cable colors: White, Blue, Purple, Yellow, Grey and then an assortment of keystone jack colors too.
Although in this case all the keystone jacks will be white. Just using the purple cable as it's left over. |

VaprotanVaprotanPremium join:2002-07-03 Kingsport, TN | I'd really like to pick some purple cable up sometime, right now its just a mix of various colors and I've been planning on doing some color coding (along with the keystone jacks) but just haven't had a chance or the funding to do so.
Actually a puple/yellow combo wouldn't look too bad now that I think of it. -- Brad ~ Blog | Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal |

EdrickI aspire to tell the story of a lifetimePremium join:2004-09-11 Woburn, MA | We did Purple & Yellow at work along with Colored Keystone jacks. But because they were constantly changing stuff around in the field (computers, phones, more computers no phones) the color coding I guess was just to make it easy for them to run. |

 | any details on the rack? Where did you get it? |

EdrickI aspire to tell the story of a lifetimePremium join:2004-09-11 Woburn, MA | I haven't purchased it yet, I'll get you some more details as they come. My local supply house I purchase our networking equipment from has a 12U Enclosed one for $230.00. So Ill get some pictures when I can. |

EdrickI aspire to tell the story of a lifetimePremium join:2004-09-11 Woburn, MA | I had some extra HDSDI cable basically it just runs from that corner of the desk and drops out right where the wall ports are. I put them there incase I want to route a RF feed or some type of other video feed say from a future Video Interface or Playback Deck. So basically just future use. |

| I would love to have something like HDSDI for consumer electronics. HDMI is such a pain in the butt in comparison. Short cable length limitations, lack of ability to assemble your own cables, lack of retention mechanism on the connectors, higher possibility of failure, etc.
Sadly, the movie industry banned the standard from being used in consumer equipment, for its lack of encryption. |

EdrickI aspire to tell the story of a lifetimePremium join:2004-09-11 Woburn, MA | It always amazed me that the consumer market is stuck with pains like HDMI. We've been spoiled in the production industry just run a single cable super thing and BAM full HD quality. The cable gets expensive too but luckily I had a bunch of extra stuff that was left over so it was free. |

| reply to Edrick Yeah, I had some Cisco 7960s that I set up at an old job. No pretty color screens, but at least I could put custom backgrounds on them.
Fun fact, you can telnet into the phone and remotely enter key presses |

Fun fact, you can telnet into the phone and remotely enter key presses Haha, that's awesome. I dare not try though, my sys admin would be very angry I'm sure. Insecure protocols are becoming strictly forbidden. -- less talk, more music |
