[ps3] Workaround for Netflix on PS3 w/o PSN account?

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this thread or if there isn't a forum here that this would be appropriate for. Mods, please move if necessary or if there's no forum where this would be relevant, just delete it I guess

Anyway, I just signed up for the Netflix 1-month trial, but unfortunately this was rather bad timing, since PSN is down until at least sometime next week. As a result, I can't run Netflix on my PS3, since I don't have a PSN account.

Is there any workaround so I can use my free trial? Or am I screwed out of a week of the Netflix trial?

I've heard once you get the error that Netflix does not work without PSN, just keep trying to launch/login to Netflix. Eventually it lets you through (after 2 tries or so).

Hmm I did read something like that, but I thought it was for people who already had PSN accounts. I'll give it a shot, thanks!

Nope, doesn't work, because as soon as I click on Netflix, it prompts me whether I want to create a PSN account or not. If I select no, it just drops me back to the menus. If I click yes, it takes me to the PSN signup and trying to sign up gives me that error.

Oh well, I guess I will have to wait until PSN is back online. Kind of a waste of a week of the Netflix trial though. :/

Oh, yea.. the workaround only works if you already have PSN access on the PS3. Contact Netflix. Maybe they'll be willing to extend the trial due to the downtime.

you have no account at all? I was going to say if you had one just keep trying to sign in until the sign in stuff goes away and you are online.

Nope, never created one. I bought the PS3 mostly to do bluray and play a few games, but I have two young kids, so my time is rather limited for gaming. So I haven't had a need to create a PSN account. I guess I'll just wait until they fix it and hopefully I have a few days left on my Netflix trial.

The PS3 does do HD Netflix streaming right? I imagine the title selection is rather limited, though.

yes it does do HD streaming but it's mostly the newer stuff.. but I've seen some older stuff in HD as well, the only thing is you never really know what is in HD.. to find out you press select on the PS controller and it brings up this little thing in the upper left that tells you.

I take it back it will show that it's in HD and 5.1 sound before you play it on the right hand side.

Well, I can't speak about those who have no PSN account at all, but the way I got my netflix to work was to cancel out (circle button) when it prompts you to enter your PSN login info. but the trick is to wait until your instant queue displays (the Netflix menu's process in the background regardless of not being logged into PSN). It worked for me, but I have a PSN account, although I wouldn't see how it matters, with the PSN down, I still get the "You have to have a valid PSN account to access this feature" message. I am paraphrasing that message.

It's different when you don't have a PSN account. It detects that no PSN account is available/setup no the PS3, and it immediately takes me to a screen asking if i want to create an account or cancel. If I cancel from there, it just drops me back to the menus.

I feel bad for all those people buying a PS3 and not knowing that PSN is down :-/

I'm so curious of what the status message is going to be when PSN is back up.

at least I get 30 days to see how PS + is like..

Well, PSN is back and I could create an account. I'm playing with it a bit on the PS3, but nothing is playing in HD. It reports "High/SD" if I hit info. My internet connection is 22 Mbps down (and I always get full speed). So I don't think that's the problem.

Do I have to pay more or wait until I'm out of a trial and an actual paying customer before I can watch in HD? And the audio is stereo instead of DD 5.1 or DTS. Is this normal?

My guess would be it's a PSN issue. PSN may be back up but it is not functioning correctly. You can't go to the store etc.
