Planning to visit DC - need suggestions on where to stay

I've been to DC about 10 years ago on 2 day bus tour.

I now plan to visit again and stay for about a week. I will be driving my car from NYC.

I am looking for suggestions on where to stay outside the DC. Main reason for doing this is because hotel prices/parking seem to be much cheaper outside the DC, and service is sometimes better too.

From what I understand one can stay very close to DC and just take a train to DC every day. I don't mind doing this as soon as travel time is reasonable and train is withing walking distance.

So far it seems that Arlington fits the description (correct me if I am wrong)

What are other towns I should consider?

When are you thinking of being here? That can have a major impact on room and rate flexibility. You can get some obscenely cheap rates at top-notch hotels that are walking distance or a quick subway ride away. The secret is to contact the property directly, not their toll-free reservation number. I know quite a few folks who scored $85/night rates.

I haven't decided yet - maybe at the end of May or some time in June
