Climb on mother's roof, see a naked neighbor girl, get Wi-Fi

20 Crazy Things People Do to Get Wi-Fi Connections

Dated CIO article, please read it with a wink

said by CIO :
In their quest to get Wi-Fi Internet connectivity, people have done some pretty desperate things over the years.

Driving around in sheer panic looking for a Starbucks (but hoping for a Panera, which offers free Wi-Fi) or hopping on a neighbor's unsecured signal has become commonplace.

But then there's a whole other level of desperation that comes while some people are searching for the almighty Wi-Fi access point. The evidence: an August 2008 survey of 300 remote employees who work on company-issued laptops.

The survey asked these road warriors: "What interesting or out of the ordinary things have you ever done to get connected to the Internet and/or company network, when working remotely?" Of the open-ended responses, here are the most noteworthy: [please read full article]
Personally I like this one: "Had to climb on my mother's roof once. It was so fun. I actually saw a naked neighbor girl."

A bit old, but still fun. They need to update it for new stories.

Doesn't everyone have a data plan on their phone anymore, so who cares about leaching a free wi-fi anymore?

Blake,

Some of out here don't need nor want a wireless phone that is more than a phone. I have six (or is it seven?) computers in my house that run 24/7. I rarely leave my house for more than a few hours. I don't need a phone that can go to the internet. My laptop rarely leaves home.

I totally understand that, I've even considered making areas of my home smart phone/tablet/laptop/etc free, as I'm amazed at how addictive smart phones can be (when the family gets together for a visit, how many of them are doing stuff on their phones etc)? I've even contemplated getting an old 'dumb' phone as it seems that smart phone sometime seem in control of people's lives and I don't want that for me.

I find it interesting that wifi scanners are not allowed by Apple on their iPhones (there were some but they were removed from the App store by Apple) and you can't write them (yet) for Microsoft's Windows Phone, but I sometimes wonder if that is a telco requirement for the phone vendors as the data plans make lots of $$$ for them, but it seems that very few people anymore don't have a data plan so using open wifi's (I sometimes have one here for guests), is a thing of the past.

Correct.

People with a data plan reaching the limit and trying to avoid incurring overage charges. FWIW I know several people acting this way.
