Why WNR3500L slows my upload speed

I have a Qwest VDSL 20/5 connection. When I connect directly to my Zyxel Q100, I get 18.8/4.6. But when I connect through my netgear wnr3500l router (behind the dsl modem) the speed reduces to 18.8/0.8. The speed remains same on wired/wireless connection. Any idea why the netgear router slows down the upload speed ?.

Has it to do anything with the "MTU" setting ?

I flashed my router with the open source firmware "DD-RT". Now I get full upload/ download speeds.

Best way to go. I found them for my WNDR3300 when I first got it and had DNS issues that Netgear changed and would not let me control. dd-wrt is genius. They give you the ability to fix a world of hurt and make it right.
