[Other] cable modem - rca dcm425
i have had verizon dsl for a long time and just put in a zywall usg 20. i'm pretty used to how the front panel on the usg 20 looks at different loads. the wan port is totally static when i put my mac to sleep. the lan1 port on the usg 20 also goes static when the computer isn't doing anything in partucular. great. ok.
just got cable internet installed and things act slightly differently.
1. the cable modem 'cable activity' and 'pc link' light *always* blink like crazy. no matter if the computer is active, asleep or even off.
2. the wan port light on my usg 20 blinks like crazy (seemingly along with the modem) all the time. no matter if the computer is active, asleep or off.
3. the lan 1 port on the usg 20 is sporadic. when the computer is at sleep, it can blink every so often. when it's busy, of course it blinks steadily.
of the three items, only 3 makes any kind of sense. even though i believe that when the computer is asleep, the lan1 port *should* be static.
ok - so the dsm 425 doc here: »ww2.cox.com/residential/centralf···00000%7D seems to indicate that blinking cable activity and pc link is normal behavior. but it does say that if the pc link light is blinking, the modem is transmitting. what can it be transmitting when all connected computers are asleep or off?
see: »[Equipment] "PC" light on modem suddenly always blinking
no real solution there..
however, regardless: why should my lan 1 port on the firewall get *any* kind of blink when all connected computers are alseep or off?
at any rate, all seems to function correctly. i get ~10/~.5 as advertised, so what am i griping about? a few lights flickering in the night? hm..
i do wonder if the usg 20 is getting 'over used' somehow. but this is why i got the usg 20 in the first place: with cable, i got nothing between the wide world and my rinky dink computer network.
maybe i just gotta get used to 'das blinking lights' and get over it.
".. the sofa has just vanished." ".. well, that's one mystery less."
