Vonage and Changing phone numbers

I am a bit confused about the policy on changing phone numbers with Vonage.

I am interested in the service, but am unsure. I would like to try the service with a *separate* phone number from my regular service provider. Apparently my current number can be ported over to Vonage, but I hate to make the leap to cancel my old service before trying Vonage for a while. If I like it (ie call quality, etc) I would then like to cancel my regular provider and port the number (which is known to all my friends and family over to Vonage). Can I do this? (ie. port my regular service provider number over to Vonage *after* using it for a month or so?)

When you sign up for Vonage you will assigned you a new number. You can use it separately as long as you wish. Once you are ready to port your "old service" number to Vonage you can initiate a number change during which time you can chose to transfer your "old service' number from another carrier. Really the only difference from doing it this way as opposed to when you sign up is that it costs 9.99 + tax do do afterwards but is free if done when you sign up.

Very Important. Do *not* cancel you old phone service. The port can only work for active numbers and your old carrier should close your account once the port is complete. If you cancel before finishing the port your risk losing you old number.

EDIT: Just noticed you are in Canada. Although the overall process should be the same you the fees and exact steps may differ there so you may want to confirm with Vonage. The basics however should be the same as in the US. You are given 1 number when you sign up, you port your "old service number" and then have 2 numbers. If you decide to keep both numbers you pay extra for the 2nd line per month or you get rid of the first number and just keep your transferred 'old service" number.

I am not sure of Vonage's procedures for porting anymore. It has been too long since I had my number ported to Vonage.

I would recommend than you sign up to port your number to Vonage at signup. Then do not send in the required authorization form until you are happy with the service. They will assign you a temporary number to use until your port is complete.
