| Thinking about a logo for my brother If anyone wants to help me brainstorm ...
Hi everyone. Since I've be back at work after my 18 month forced economic vacation, Ive been working so much now, I've been mostly away from all you creative people. Posting picks for Hank at »Artify 340 has surely made me miss being here like I was.
Another thing I am cramming into my personal time slots is helping my brother Rick manage his site »SolaRoof.org
SolaRoof.org has existed for probably a decade, and is more an open community project, It goes hand-in-hand with Rick's career of energy efficiency consulting that takes him to many interesting places. The irony is, as I became busy at work, that is when Rick and I talked about me helping him out. A Wiki is so foreign to me, I've been burning tons of hours wrapping the way it works around my brain!
This one post by him stuck me as a sorely needed element to this site I am getting to know.
said by »www.solaroof.org/Wiki/SolaRoof/SolaRoof : A google search shows that the large majority of use of the term solaroof is connected with the Sola Roof Community and worldwide it is a term that is now widely used - so much so that it would be deemed a public domain. In the future if we want to have a trademark I think we would do the same as the Open Source Definition have done and create a solaroof community logo that can be registered. At this stage, I've poured plenty of volunteer time into reading up on how this Wiki site works and learning how I might improve it. Graphics are my weakest of skills - I'm more focused on the code and content. I thought someone here might be inclined to help me out?
The best example I can give right now is something simple like what the creator of the PmWiki has done.
»www.pmwiki.org/Wiki - this 66x32 px logo and a recognizably similar favicon in my opinion are simple yet effective. I have always been in awe of what everyone can do here, so I cannot be remiss by failing to ask.
Plus the Pm as a .ico
Rick's site promotes a closed environment energy efficient roofing technology. This is what Rick says about the openness of his concepts: »www.solaroof.org/Wiki/SolaRoof/OpenSource
One way I've see Rick color the name SolaRoof is like this example slide.
This is one example of how I've seen "SolaRoof" colored.

I've played with some ideas, but have not had an epiphany.
 The color combinations are terrible!
Simple, nicer, but does not lend well to a 32x32 pixle ico file.

A subtly animated logo is not out of the question. No hurry if anyone feels inclined. This whole "feed the world" concept Rick has, has been a couple decades waiting to take off. I feel it is a noble dream. If nothing else, I am having fun volunteering, and maybe giving back to the planet in my efforts.
Just stumbled across this interesting link about Rick's dreams: »www.dreamfish.com/pg/profile/SolaRoofGuy --

Kind of captures the double layer roof concept too.
What I like about this version of the sun is it could look more like a yellow sun and the purple parts could look like water droplets if they were blue.
The creativity here is awesome! The sun also could be a great favicon. |

4 edits | WOW! I totally missed this post somehow! Nice work!
There is no fast time-table for this logo either. A couple images that have appeared on SolaRoof.org have an appeal with some of the collaborators. Just thought I would add this info in case it inspires anyone.

A bubble icon of some sort may be more powerful, just like the Nike check-mark says Nike on its own (Although massive advertising has a lot to do with that too!) The bubbles in the two examples do not maybe look as obvious/realistic.
(Some text between will help keep one image from overwhelming the other.)

The name still needs to be SolaRoof. Personally, I like the CamelCase way of spelling so people do not real Solar-Oof, but rather Sola-Roof.
Did I explain about the bubbles? A greenhouse with hollow roof and walls using a translucent covering. Soap bubble can fill, or be removed over several minutes adding shading and insulating properties 20x most conventional methods. So believe it or not, bubbles are the future to energy efficiency
Conventional greenhouses need to vent heat, generate conventional heat, and even cooling, or only operate part of the year where the climate changes from season to season.
These backyard projects that my brother is campaigning for is a way to bring attention to this technology, and learn as a community.
ALSO, I tried the sun image as an ICO, but it looks a bit washed out with a white background »www.solaroof.org/wiki

I'll give the bubbles some thought. probably need to start from scratch to make it work. -- Who killed Karen Woodcock? |

1 edit | I can use all the help I can get and you are very creative so I am glad to have you (and others) providing input.
BTW, this is a scratch test of the other logo on a local PC - not on the net.

 | reply to usa2k wow... it was really nice to see how people are helping each other, like here they helped usa2k in making decision about logo design decision for him by investing their time and effort and proposing some very nice designs. This is the same pattern that I see on www.designcontest.com where people help each other using brilliant design contests and making the graphics world a very good place t live. |
