Qwest vs. Cox "advertised speeds"

Simple question:

Why does a Qwest 12Mbps/768kbps connection consistently test near or under 10Mbps on MANY DIFFERENT ONLINE and personally conducted http and ftp downloads?

And why can't it deliver as promised like COX DOES? In every instance where I see Cox customers if I do a speed test; I get at LEAST what they subscribe to if not more.

So why does Qwest advertise 12Mbps when they don't deliver it and Cox delivers what they advertise?

Every Qwest employee I have talked to (technicians who come out to do service/new installs) tells me that you don't get the full advertised speeds due to "protocol overhead". Speed tests done on Qwest speed test sites, speedtest.net, and others show nearly exact performance results; and those results are "acceptable" by Qwest techs.

While I can appreciate that thought, protocol overhead shouldn't exactly negate 2Mbps off a 12Mbps connection.

If protocol overhead was the real issue why doesn't Cox have the same problem? Or if they DO then they are really delivering MORE BANDWIDTH than what you are actually paying for.

Am I correct in assuming that Qwest basically short changes all their DSL clients?

PPPoE overhead accounts for 10-15% of the speed loss. Their sync rate is in fact 12 (or somewhere near it,) but because of PPPoE and ATM overhead to a lesser extent, you will never see 12/768.

Cox doesn't use PPPoE (or ATM) and therefore does not have this problem.

Speed boost. Download same speed range I own you. Upload I still do though not as god as other Cox.
When I had Qwest my speed was solid Qwest now standalone solid Cox.
Some cox customers do have problems and switch to qwest.

Poor them.

PPPoE is exactly 8 bits in the packet. There are 1500 bits in the packet total. PPPoE therefore accounts for .5% of the overhead of the ethernet packet.

BETTER providers will over-provision to make sure you get what you pay for. the fact they're using a protocol meant for DIALUP means they could care less about you getting what you pay for.

Case in point:

I am on the 20/5 plan with Qwest. My Modem shows that I am connected at a little above 20/5. However, when I run a speed test using Qwest's site, I get 18.7/4.7

From what I have heard, even with the PPPoE overhead, I'm pretty lucky.

Does anyone think that CenturyLink will change protocol's when the merger is totally complete?

Oh, so is it ATM that accounts for the majority of the overhead?

I just upgraded to 40/5 with Qwest to see how that will work (will take effect on Monday the 23rd). I previously had 40/20, and speeds, especially upload were not that great. I'm hoping that leaving the upload at 5mbps will give different results. So, should I be happy if I have decent latency and 34-36 down on a speed test?

Same here, 40/5 but my modem will only connect at 34/5 (bad wiring I guess). Love the speeds and pretty damn cheap with a 2 year price freeze. (57 dollars)

When you ordered 40/5, did they tell you that you couldn't connect close to the 40 Meg?

When I was getting my speed changed, I was told by the tech that while I qualify for 40, the most I would probably get is around 30 Mbps

Yeah when they came out to connect and did some tests he told me. I was okay with it. 34 is better than 20 down Same price pretty much as well.

Just got the 40/5 today. The speed seems fine. This Speed Test to a close server shows a pretty high latency, however, using the Ping Test, I get 35ms, and using Qwest's own Speed test, I get 31ms.
