Reported issues with Flash Player 10.3 and Internet Explorer

May 17, 2011 - Adobe AIR and Adobe Flash Player Team Blog
quote:
Reported issues with Flash Player 10.3 and Internet Explorer 9
We are tracking and actively investigating the issues reported with Flash Player 10.3 and Internet Explorer 9. Users are reporting that SWF content is being displayed in the upper left corner of the screen. We want to give those of who are encountering these issues an update.

First, we apologize to everyone affected — we know you count on Flash Player as an integral component of the web and we strive for high quality and performance in each release. We are actively looking into the root cause and best fix for this issue, and many thanks to those of you who have submitted the necessary information via email and our online bug database which has given us the solid leads we are pursuing.

Flash Player 10 and later can use your system’s graphics hardware to accelerate video decoding, and can also accelerate video presentation on some sites. Starting with Flash Player 10.2, Flash Player also takes advantage of hardware accelerated graphics in Internet Explorer 9, utilizing hardware rendering surfaces to improve graphics performance.

The reports for Flash Player 10.3 indicate that systems with Intel HD Graphics adapters running Internet Explorer 9 are the systems being impacted by this particular bug. However, if you are encountering this issue and have a different configuration we’d love to hear from you. Please review the instructions on this page for details on generating the information we’ll need for further investigation.

There are a few workarounds that you can do on your end until this issue is resolved:

1. On some systems, you may be able to resolve this issue by updating the Intel HD Graphics drivers . It has been reported that driver versions 8.15.10.2361 and above do not exhibit this bug. Unfortunately, some systems might require updates directly from your system manufacturer. We're working with system manufacturers to make sure they include the latest drivers in future releases.

2. You can disable hardware acceleration in Internet Explorer 9 using the instructions on this page . Please note that you should re-enable hardware acceleration once this problem has been resolved to enjoy the full benefits of hardware acceleration.

We will continue provide updates as new information becomes available.

Too early to tell if it's related:

But since I updated Flash this morning, it's been crashing Firefox 4.
I can't count how many time's I've had to restart/refresh Firefox today.

It's been ages since I've had frequent flash crashing.

BTW - Video is older NVidia.

If there's a pattern, I image someone else will chime in.

It's a Quadro4 - ancient but supported.
The rest of it is a Dual Xeon 3.06GHz w/ 4GB RAM and a SCSI 320 drive.

The most recent system BIOS available is dated 2006 - so the box is prob from 2004.
It's too old to run a 64bit OS so I have Win7 Pro 32bit.

It's actually runs really well.
Except for the video, the Win Experience rates 4.9-5.9

Why would anyone be using IE 9 in the first place?
People should always wait when new versions of ANY software are out.

IE 9 is to be still considered a newbie out there and I may cause issues like this one down the road.

Always wait whenever a new version comes out.

I am using IE9 and Win7 Pro with dual ATI 4870 graphics cards. When I run a radio player (specifically Pandora and others), the songs won't switch. I already contacted Pandora and they couldn't help.

The songs only switch if I maximize the browser window, but since this is background music, constantly maximizing is a problem.

I didn't have this problem with Flash Player 10.2. Is there any way to switch back?

I had the problem - at first I thought I might have a virus or spyware infection until I realized it started happening after the automatic update to Flash 10.3.

After doing a search I found this blog on Adobe.com explaining how to fix it. I updated my Intel HD Graphics Driver as suggested and it fixed it.

Thanks chachazz I been reading up on all these issues with the new Flash Player 10.3 and Internet Explorer all over the official Adobe Flash forums. Will be interesting to see who is at fault.

Good thing most of us don't use Internet Explorer here. If you don't a lot of people have been going back to IE8 because of this issue at this time. Leave it up to Adobe to mess up something this big.

They really needed to put the gpu accel option in the control panel applet, and I have also turned it off as I'm tired of programs wanting to use the gpu when they don't need to when my processor isn't having issues processing the information already. I run multiple monitors, and I don't need half a dozen applications all fighting over my single gpu which is already doing double duty, especially when I'm running a program that actually needs the gpu for what it was meant to process. This is why we have multi-threaded processors.

I've even disabled gpu acceleration in my browser of choice after I noticed it did effect gpu intensive programs just by loading basic webpages, and when it was off the cpu had more than enough spare cycles to handle the task.

BlitzenZeus thank you for this comment. Because I want to implement your idea are these settings in the Intel HD driver, browser or bios settings? I am not using an HD graphics PC at the moment.

Edit: I just found and read the link which explained how to disable hardware acceleration in IE9.

The GPU acceleration issue was causing a horizontal split screen for me in Firefox not too long ago, until I turned it off.

I found a site that has version 10.2.159.1 for download at »www.oldapps.com/flash_pl ··· layer=29

It was flagged okay by McAfee Site Advisor, I scanned it with my McAfee updated subscription Virus Scanner and installed it and it reverted me back to the old version of Flash.

I will be using this version of Flash until a fix is announced.

We will be releasing an update next week to address both issues (top-left and in/out full screen). We also continue to follow up on reports that the pre-release build doesn’t resolve the problem on some computers. The dxdiag info is very helpful, and also please post the URL where you are experiencing these problems.

They really needed to test this out first, I think that a computer I have has been crashing due to new the new flash. I've removed the hacktivex flash, but left the plugin flash installed for browsers like Firefox/Opera/etc.. I don't need programs which were too lazy to not use IE's interface to crash my system, and so far it's been quite stable. Even a resident av I had installed on the system used flash for part of it's interface, and I first removed the av, yet now I suspect flash for causing all the problems. Sometimes I really hate how lazy some windows programmers have become. It's apparently been messing with my nvidia video driver, and my directx.
