I can't search on DSL (too common). Ha. I did come up with this thread, which is not the one I was thinking of: »VZ letter: No More DSL.... -- There are 10 kinds of people in the world; those who understand binary and those who don't.

| You're right. In my honest opinion, they should bring back the old 5Mbps/2Mbps tier or even the 10Mbps/2Mbps tier (to match many Cable companies' standard tiers). Back in the day when that was offered for $32, I could see that as something attractive, and truthfully it was the tier that I noticed first when I saw FiOS for the first time. It's better than essentially something DSL can already do in many areas (short of some upload missing) and it'll still feel faster. 600KB/s vs 370KB/s. You can do the math I guess. |
|
 | The target for this tier currently is to try to move hsi customers to FiOS.Yea 3 / 1 isnt that fantastic, but to a mom and pop who just surf websites and check email, this would be a great option.
Just throwing this out there since we havent seen much about this. I agree, they should offer a 5/2 instead. |

I think the value of 3mbit/1mbit will attract many customers as they don't seek an over-sized broadband pipe to download porn (jk)/warez, etc.. many, as seaquake posted, just use it for browsing and email purposes.
With this new tier, you can enjoy downloading a large file while sleeping at night. It comes down to patience. And quite frankly, many people just choose not to shell out $40-$50 on typical broadband service. This, right here, attracts them. Its Verizon's market strategy. -- Does Wayne Brady have to slap a bitch? |

 | reply to seaquake said by seaquake:3/1 Is lightning compared to dial-up or low end DSL. Some people just need simple browsing and email and this is perfect for them. Thats right. I am a good example. i can only get 1.5 (after overhead) thru my long DSL loop which is near 3 miles. I am paying $29.95 a month for this. As bad as it is i CAN get one netflix stream through OK even with a light user doing email on another device at the same time. I have even crammed as much as one netflix stream , a slacker audio stream , and light email at the same time on this unthinkable horrid aging DSL line. That said this 3/1 offering if invite is offered to me would DOUBLE what i get now. It would be good enough for my use and elderly family are very light occasional users. Offer me this at a price not more then i pay now and let me toss that obsolete "home phone" ............just maybe . Then theres still the invasive install but that matter is for another thread. |

| reply to Onedollar Verizon has stated that they want to compete on 'capability', and not price. This means they only want to sell to the affluent, and don't care about those on a budget.
Some family members have DSL right now for an extra ~$25/month. They got a letter in the mail that said, "frightfully sorry, your service is being discontinued, you must migrate to FiOS, or lose your service" Their internet bill now goes from $25/mo to $52 a month.
Did I mention they're in their 80's, and only use it for email & skype? The worlds best salesperson couldn't pitch this: You'll be doing the same thing with your internet connection (you'll get the same value), but your price will go up 102% and you have no choice in the matter....

| There was a post where someone showed the text of the letter .. I was applying a little poetic justice on my earlier post, but to be serious:
The letter indicated that DSL was being retired/phased out, and you must call to set up your new FIOS service. Underlined was: "upgrade is not automatic - you must call today!" There was no deadline date given actually. The letter also gave 'special' pricing for a phone/internet bundle that was a suggested replacement for DSL. |
|
 | reply to Smith6612 The 3/1 tier will actually be provisioned at 5/2 although it is being marketed as 3/1. The price will be the same price that the existing DSL customer pays for their HSI. So if they have HSI at $19.99, they will get the 3/1 (really 5/2) for same price for 1 year.
Yes it is by invitation only, you cannot call to get this offer and only specific accounts are being targeted where we want to retire the remaining copper DSL circuits in an area.
You can find one post about it here>>(read all the way at the bottom of my post)»Re: [connectivity] rumors/mentions of forced DSL->FIOS changes |
