 | Centurylink not being competitive If Comcast offers 105Mbps service in Ogden, Why won't Centurylink upgrade to stay competitive? I have asked several times if an upgrade is going to happen `not scheduled' ARGH! |

| reply to jrmorfin How's it going neighbor. Let's break cost down so centurylink can install fiber to home. Utopia's cost to install was about $1400 a home. Then let's say the average price of internet service is $50 a month, it would take about 28 years to finally start making a profit. Now I'm not including things like phone service or tv so those would bring that time down. But the cost would be ten's of billions of dollars, not something that centurylink has on hand at the moment. Yes fiber would stop the customer bleed and would start to bring customers back, but good luck finding an investor that wants to start getting returns in 20+ years. |

| reply to jrmorfin I believe that part of CenturyLink's agreement for the Qwest merger to go through was to offer 40Mbps down to a certain percentage of people by a certain time (I don't know that exact terms of the agreement).
That being said, I would highly doubt that they would try to compete with Comcast's offering of 105Mbps down. I wish Comcast would offer that to me. -- If you need a re-format, just ask and I'll do it. If you don't need one, just give me 5 minutes with your computer, and you will. |

 | lordpuffer, I had comcast, usually with speeds higher than the tier offered, I think u might reconsider when I had over 50% packet loss > |

I live in an apartment complex, where Cable One serves the entire area except this complex. Comcast serves this complex. They offer no Internet service. So, Qwest (CenturyLink) is the only game in town for me. Where's the competition here? -- If you need a re-format, just ask and I'll do it. Don't proclaim to be a mathematician.
$50/month is $600/year and thus in 28 years you're looking at $16,800 assuming a flat fixed fee for the next 28 years. That's absurd, but it only takes 3 years to overcome the cost plus extra support taxes they pass onto you. |

| Wow how did I get out of high school. What I meant was 28 months. But still in investor talk that is too long, result now not later. But I will do this math (double check this time): Let's say that centurylink wanted to hook up 4 million potential and current customers and at the install cost of $1400 a home, it would cost 5.6 billion dollars. Now they made $233 million in the first quarter. If they saved that money and did not give the investors anything, they could have the money to build a real fiber network in about 24 quarters or 6 years. Now I'm sure that they could talk the government into funding a chunk of that but still, good luck in talking the investors to give up their money for say 4 years. |
