DSLR 30-Day Project - Elements of Design

From the "signup" thread:
said by drew:

To make it interesting and to improve the "artistic" side of the hobby, rather than the technical, I was thinking of using a reference, like this to pick a 7-day (or 5-day) schedule each week. For example: Monday would be "Line", Tuesday, "Texture", etc.

I'd love to get a few participants. I don't care if you're shooting a camera phone, your brand new entry-level DSLR with 18-55mm kit lens, a full-frame 5DMk2 or a $42,000 Hasselblad H4D-60. Just a camera!

Rules
1. The goal of this project is to try and make photography part of our daily lives and to use the chosen design element to learn something new. I would ask that only photos taken on that day, give or take a few hours, are added. We're obviously going to repeat some subjects, so keep it in mind for the next time that subject comes up
2. Have fun!
3. Please obey the 1024px (on the long side) rule for DSLR.

Monday - May 23 - Line

Description of Line from Bryan Peterson's Learning to See Creatively Revised Edition, pg. 50

Of the six elements of design--line, shape, form, texture, pattern, and color--which is the strongest? Line! Without line there can be no shape, without shape there can be no form, without shape and form there can be no texture. And, without line or shape, there can be no pattern.

A line can be long or short, thick or thin. It can lead you away or move you forward. It can be felt as restful, rigid, active, soothing, or threatening.

More on Line from R. Berdan, in the article titled "COMPOSITION & the ELEMENTS of VISUAL DESIGN"

A line represents a "path" between two points. A line can be straight, curved, vertical, horizontal, diagonal, or zigzag. Lines imply motion and suggest direction or orientation. A line can also be implied, that is filled in by the mind when several points are positioned geometrically within a frame. Placing four dots on a page in the shape of a square can imply the points are linked as the mind searches for recognizable patterns. The direction and orientation of a line can also imply certain feelings. Horizontal lines imply tranquility and rest, whereas vertical lines imply power and strength. Oblique lines imply movement, action and change. Curved lines or S shaped lines imply quiet, calm and sensual feelings. Lines that converge imply depth, scale and distance - a fence or roadway converges into the distance provides the illusion that a flat two-dimensional image has three-dimensional depth. A line is an effective element of design because it can lead the viewer's eye. To create more effective photographs actively look for lines and arrange them within your viewfinder to invoke specific feelings.

The PM and then the way you have the first post setup reminds me of mafia games.

Thanks for running this, drew.

Tuesday - May 24 - Texture

said by »photoinf.com/General/Robert_Berd···sign.htm :

Texture refers to the surface quality or "feel" of an object - smooth, rough, soft, etc. Textures may be actual (felt with touch - tactile) or implied (suggested by the way an artist has created the work of art -visual). Texture is often emphasized in oblique lighting as it strikes the objects from one side.

While all the photos posted (except for Bryon’s) are very nice they pretty much fit in the category of texture. They do not have a focal point. Bryon’s use of lines is very well done.

Lines in photos are like trails, fences, tree trunks leading the eye to beautiful fall foliage, or to the focal point. A line can be a water fall, the stem of a flower, the shape of a building. Here is a very simple and basic use of lines »/showpic/dimag···1057&1=1. The tree limb leads your eye to the focal point.

Guys don’t make this hard, lines are all around you, just put a frame around them.

I just posted a photo in the gallery I shot a couple of years ago and it is an example of implied lines. This is a little harder to do. »/showpic/dimag···3347&1=1 The red flower blossoms create a triangle when connected. Triangle shapes in photos are good.

Good comment Sue- I was thinking about this on my way to work this morning.

The natural tendency for these sorts of things is to make the topic (line, in this case) the subject of the photo. I consciously did that last night as I was not feeling very well and just wanted to make sure I got something.

The idea, eventually, is to ensure your composition has one or more elements of design. You very clearly spelled this out
