[connectivity] FairPoint DSL keeps dropping every few mins -Verm

Located in Pittsfield, VT. Just moved from New Jersey and am really missing FIOS.

DSL is currently my only option.

FairPoint DSL keeps dropping every few mins, however is stable sometimes for a few hours. (154 drops in 24 hours)

Going to try and wire the modem direct to the teleco box next.

When the connection is working I can get 6 megs down /.3/.4 up. Seems more like dial-up speed coming from FIOS or my office connection.

Seems like my noise margin is bouncing around from 17db to 6db.

The phone line when connected also has an insane amount of static (Filter in place) Disconnecting the phone has no impact on the dsl droping.

Should I call fairpoint now, or wait until I wire the modem direct?

These are the modem stats: (Using a Cisco 887VA)

Re: [connectivity] FairPoint DSL keeps dropping every few mins -

Welcome to the wonderful world of Fairpoint!

Unreliable, inconsistent, those are Fairpoint mottos.

Offpeak hours: No problem (download 2.80 or so...that's all that's available in my area). Consistent speed.

Peak hours: Slow and VERY inconsistent. While performing a speedtest I watch the speed go from 1.70 to 0.45 to 0.90 to 0.10 (that last number is NOT an exageration). Finally gave up calling when I realized they have a majorly overloaded network. Of course when i call they give me the "we're upgrading our network all the time but I do not know when they'll be in your area."

Thinking of switching over to Comcast but I don't really feel like paying their price-gouging fees...

Depends where you are. I live in an area in southern VT that previously had no Verizon legacy equipment. Fairpoint installed all new technology and I consistently get:

I get these results regardless of the time of day. At one point I was getting about half of that or less from 6-11 PM. I worked with tech support and they would even call me in the evenings to monitor my system. Somehow the issue was resolved even though no one at Fairpoint claimed to do anything.

Just saying it ain't all bad with Fairpoint. I don't know if I'm in the minority, but I would guess I am not. People don't generally come to the forum to say how good their service is.

Sounds like you have ADSL2 there. The equipment in my town is ADSL. I'm really not to concerned about the speed. Just need the line to stay connected to work.

Going to try rewiring the house and for from there.

If all else fails will be ordering a T-1.

Speed at the office in NJ:

The Fios I had was 35/35 and never went down in 3 years.

Things should get better for Maine, when FairPoint taps into the 3 ring binder when completed.

Noise margin should be more consistent. It is normal to have it vary a couple of dB but 17 > 6 indicates something is seriously wrong.

Does audible noise go away if you turn the modem off? Is so may be a problem with filters either at your residence or at the DSLAM. Since you indicate speed does not change disconnecting phone most likely a problem with the circuit itself.

Try to connect phone to test jack at Telco NID. That disconnects inside wiring eliminating it as a possible source of the problem. Do you still have noise? If so probably has nothing to do with DSL - rather there is a problem with the line itself, probably bad splice or partial short. In that case call voice repair.

If noise goes away connect modem to test jack. Is it stable? If not something is seriously wrong with the circuit.

If connecting just the modem to the test jack is stable try one more test. Still using the test jack get a "Y" adapter and connect phone (with filter) and modem at the same time. If noise goes away there is a problem with inside wiring/equipment. If noise is there, but only when DSL modem is connected most likely problem with the DSLAM.

DSL filters are directional. Be sure you are connecting them in the proper direction.

To summarize:

1) Noise with only phone connected to test jack - problem with line.
2) Poor DSL performance with only modem connected to test jack - problem with line.
3) Noise only occurs when modem and phone connected to test jack. Problem with DSLAM or you have a bad filter.
4) Problem only occurs when modem connected at its normal location. Problem with inside wiring.

Good Luck.

Looks like it's not in the house.

Rewired everything with Cat 6 from the NID in the house (about a 40 foot run to the DSL modem) . Worked ok for 24 hours, then back to noise on the line again. Off and On, from 20 DB to 2 DB.

I don't understand how it can be stable for 24 hours, and then start acting funny.

Then tried running Cat 3 cable from the NID right to the modem with a 3 foot cable. Cramped an RJ-11 on one end one, same issues.

Same issues with both a Cisco 887VA and the Fairpoint modem.

Going to call them up, ask them to check out the circuit.

If all else fails ordering a T-1 line @ 350 a month....ouch or I'm selling a house after 30 days of ownership.

Tech came out this AM. Using a different pair in the line. Worked well for 10-15mins, then right back to the same issues.

That is kind of a good news/bad news situation. The good news unless you are really unlucky the problem is not on the portion of the circuit the tech swapped. The bad news you still have the problem.

On your recording noise did not start until after you began dialing and dialtone went away. I'm by no means a telephone expert but that sound like a problem with the Central Office switch rather then your copper circuit. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can chime in.

The noise is there right as you pick up the phone. Pressing the key just makes it so you can hear the static better in a recording. Any phone, even directly plugged in to the NID.

Perhaps a bad port at the CO?

That's the only thing they have not tried yet.

House up the road phone is perfect/clear.

Same wiring one min:

Looking like an ATT Mifi with 1 bar, has a way more stable connection.

Afternoon all!!

Can you take a pic of your Network Interface Device and throw it on up?? I'm just curious which one you have. Some of the older ones have a capacitor in them that causes dsl issues. Back in the day pre dsl they were used for testing, now they just cause issues. Plus i'm just curious on what you have. Thanks and i hope it isn't too much trouble for ya.

The NID is brand new. They installed it when they did the DSL.

If you could when you get a chance go out to your NID and see where your internal wires are plugged into at the NID. Now a days new dsl installs have ADSL splitters installed right inside the nid:

»www.tiinetworktechnologi ··· 0108.pdf

If that is in there confirm that your internal pair goes on the DATA side of that connector. If it goes to the T + R (Tip/Ring) connection you will prob. have issues. But if you only have that one pair going into your home, everything in the house (analog stuff) will have to have a filter on it since the data side is just a pass through and the T + R side is a filtered connection.

Other than that your stats look great (when it is working). You are on the older DSLAMs it looks like due to g.dmt and not adsl2+, but it shouldn't matter. By the looks of your stats you are not to far away. I have a feeling the tech changed the pair from the pole to the house, but not from pole to pole. If you check all the wiring and its all good keep calling Fairpoint til they do a pair change. Good luck

No 'data' option off the NID. All phone connections. (Red/Green)

Will go out and take some pics later.

The house line is still the same. Only one pair run from the pole to the house. (10-12 gauge or so.)

The tech said he changed the pair from one section to the next closest to my house. He had a toner hooked up at the CO, sounded clear, no static, and loud.

Perhaps another part of the line, or maybe an issue at the DSLAM.

I have had all of those problems you mentioned to a T Neosomatic. Must be about 1 year or so for sure. I'll go for a while with no problem then it happens. They seem to try to fix it but they admit the lines are old and they have had to be in Vt. because of contract commitment with VT.
It worked good for 4 years then last year or so it started in.
I'd switch if I could to Comcast but no cable in the hood.

Well they are coming back today -perhaps a new line to the house? Different port at the CO?
Who knows.....

Yes I tried calling Comcast for a Biz line..No service here for that at all. Looks like it's available in the town below and the town above, but not in my town.

Vermont has a community fiber thing going..(»www.ecfiber.net/) Called and asked about it, they said 12 months to my town if everything goes as planned...and it never does.

Currently using ATT's 3g network for work. It's not that bad. 3 megs down .3 up. I would of thought that ATT uses Fairpoints network to get out of Vermont? Perhaps they are tunneling out?

Looks like problem is first hop between you and edge router. Unfortunately because it is within ATM network it is impossible for end-user to see what is going on.

I assume this is time-of-day dependant. Works fine when load is light - terrible when heavy.

They ran a new line to the house from the pole.

-No more static on the line

-DSL seems to be working well.

Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 7616 864

I can almost guarantee you the problem is at the CO with the DSLAM. I have had the same exact problem twice. Bad static on line, dropping connection at random intervals. It might stay connected 5 minutes or 5 hours.

Both times my ISP plugged me into a different DSLAM and that solved the problem both times.

Have them try this and see if it solves the problem.
