myq @bellsouth.net | Earthlink Networking Craziness? I've been reading different things and am completely confused as to what would happen if I were to try Earthlink DSL.
Right now, I have two PCs connected via Ethernet and two Printers as well to a single AT&T Gateway. Is it true that you have to have a modem and a router and Earthlink doesn't provide a Gateway? I also heard crazy stuff about them trying to charge extra for having more than one thing connected; can anyone shed light on that? Also, installing any form of software at all, ever, from an ISP is out of the question, completely... is any software 'required'? |

Earthlink charge extra to provide [and support] their gateway.
You don't need any software. |

The Earthlink DSL Modem/Router has a preset 32 PC/IP Device DHCP Pool allotted by default.

The fully optional Earthlink Home Networking that does cost extra includes a Linksys or 2Wire Wireless Router that is setup behind the Earthlink DSL Modem that has been first placed into Bridge Mode so that the PPPoE session is handled in the Wireless Linksys or 2Wire instead of the Modem/Router.

* Share 1 high-speed connection on 4 computers * Surf wirelessly in your home * Share printers & other peripherals * Built-in firewall, network security * 24/7 phone support * Full rebate on wireless router & card/adapter
Bottom line: If anyone knows how to setup a LAN and configure their PCs, Routers and Wireless connections then they don't need the optional Earthlink Home Networking service. Those that do need hand holding and do need their LAN setup for them would benefit from the optional Earthlink Home Networking service. -- Whats the point of owning a supercar if you cant scare yourself stupid from time to time? |
