[HELP] 871w dot11radio int doesnt exist

i recently got a 871w router and i started with a clean config. My problem is that the dot11 radio int doesnt show up as a possible int.

when i type in
router(config)#interface and press ?

all the interfaces EXCEPT the dot11 radio interface show up. does the 871w have internal radios or do i have to attach the antennas for the interface to show up in the IOS?

also my IOS version is 12.4(9) T1

The AP is a complete AP internal to the Router, it does not show up in the router configuration; or at least thats the way it is on my 891W.

I cant get to mine from here, so I cant get the relevant bits of config, but hopefully that gets you on the right path.

They are not similar in that respect.

The 851w/871w has the wireless as part of the main config.

The 861w/881w/891w has the AP as a standalone unit with its own IOS and config file.

Forgive my stupid question, but i dont have one of these sitting around:
NAME: "871", DESCR: "871 chassis, Hw Serial#: FHK111010AX, Hw Revision: 0x200"
PID: CISCO871-K9 , VID: V03 , SN: FHK111010AX

Based on that output, is this really a wireless router? Wouldnt it be 871W in the part number? Or CISCO871-K9-RF?

sure about that?

from a good 871w -- i see the following from a show version

Cisco IOS Software, C870 Software (C870-ADVIPSERVICESK9-M), Version
12.4(15)T7, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc3)
Cisco 877W (MPC8272) processor (revision 0x200) with 118784K/12288K
bytes of memory.

from your output -- i see the following

Cisco 871 (MPC8272) processor (revision 0x200) with 118784K/12288K bytes of memory.
Processor board ID FHK111010AX

note the lack of a trailing 'w'.

i don't think you have an 'w' version.

I see the the virtual-dot11-radio int as well, but this is what has me scratching my head
quote:
Cisco 871 (MPC8272) processor (revision 0x200) with 118784K/12288K bytes of memory.
Processor board ID FHK111010AX
MPC8272 CPU Rev: Part Number 0xC, Mask Number 0x10
5 FastEthernet interfaces
128K bytes of non-volatile configuration memory.
28672K bytes of processor board System flash (Intel Strataflash)
No indication of a dot11 int in the interfaces.

This unit does have the two dipole antennaes on the back of it right" (Just askin')

Oh, do a "sh ip int brief" and see what you get as well...

Its a long shot but if you TRULY have a -W series device with the antennas poking out of the back, there could possibly be a software issue and you might have better luck upgrading to a newer version of code available.

My 871W:

NAME: "871W", DESCR: "871W chassis, Hw Serial#: FHKXXXXXXX, Hw Revision: 0x300"
PID: CISCO871W-G-A-K9 , VID: V05 , SN: FHKXXXXXXX

I see your IOS is not currently not available nor deffered. I suggest you update the router IOS to an image currently available. If it still reports 871 instead of 871W then get back with your vendor. He sold you the wrong chassis.
