host for my new project

i am starting work on a new project, which is going to be somewhat of a personal endeavor. I've basically used blogging tools such as wordpress and had it installed over at my host (godaddy.com). recently i got hacked and im fed up with both wordpress and godaddy

my qualms with godaddy: if im using simple html it would load fine, however, when is started using the wordpress installation, which used their mysql db, it became sluggish probably because of the location of their mysql db server being a bit away from the webserver. this just started to grind my gears.

SO im going to be writing my own blogging software. im not going to use php, instead i will be using ruby on rails, with mysql as the backend.

I'm looking for a good host, with a decent amount of uptime, allowing me to upload files of larger sizes (5Mb is a joke), and ofcourse support ruby on rails, and mostly can't be too slugish when connecting to the database server. i'd like to pay on a monthly basis, but if their service is good, i'd like to pay in bulk if it means i save some money.
i need ssh access as well (something godaddy dint have until recently).
I dont know if i need linux or windows based server, hopefully someone can chime in.

im looking to get away from godaddy, and hopefully people here can assist in my new endeavor.

thanks

Re: [seeking] host for my new project

Sounds like you would be good off with a Linux based Cpanel Server. My databases are hosted locally on the machine so you should not have any problems with sluggishness. I do support ruby on rails and can provide you SSH access.

My site is »techwebhosting.com, if you have any further questions please feel free to PM me.

Re: host for my new project

I use Surpass Hosting »www.surpasshosting.com/hosting.php (I notice they do have Ruby on Rails support) and have no complaints and any issues I had have been resolved to my satisfaction. I actually host a WordPress blog ( »blog.markheadrick.com ), Two Gallery 3 based galleries, a SMF based forum, and other sites on a shared server there.

You'll find good and bad reviews for any webhost, so you'll ultimately just have to try one out to form your own opinion. I'd never host anything on GoDaddy though. Only thing I'd use them for is domain registration.

Good luck,

Take a look at »www.canvasdreams.com/web-hosting.php (shared plans). Maximum file size allowed for upload: 2.88 GB.

Ruby on Rails is supported, quote from link above.

Fully supported Ruby on Rails development and production environments are supported on every cPanel hosting plan.

I'm quite the happy customer, great uptime.
