Any one play around with merlins firmware for n66u? Stock firmware has some cool features but is lacking in other areas. And it looks like 354 is going to be in beta forever. I tend to shy way from 3rd party firmware, but I wont use the 354 beta as it seems to have an issue with the 5GHz radio

Ive looked at tomato and dd-wrt , but the documentation is so poor on both of those sites that I really cant tell if I would like it or not.
Is there some place that gives a good overview? I have not been able to find it. Merlins docs arent so good either but at least its based on stock so all I have to to is look at what he has added or fixed.

I'm a fan of neither of those products after trying them both over the years.

I hadn't played with Tomato a lot through the years, but I DID use DD-WRT for MANY years (until a few weeks ago actually), and I really really really liked it a lot.

I'm using a Netgear WNR3500Lv2 on stock Netgear firmware. Have had no issues whatsoever.

This might be of use to someone... I picked up a Cisco/Linksys dual-band wireless bridge to provide more connectivity at the other end of my L-shaped house. Paired with the Asus RT-AC66U router I am getting amazing throughput as both devices are 802.11ac.

»www.linksys.com/en-eu/products/b···/WUMC710

I scored it cheap on eBay (brand new for $65) which is about half-price of retail. Since it's allowed me to avoid going up in the attic to pull ethernet cable, I am immensely pleased. It's hot up there.

@bhn.net

I have read some of your posts for routers in the past.

I need a new Wireless Router for RR Lightning and wonder what you think would be the best for Lightning & QOS because I have VOIP and need QOS on that port.

After your Experiences would you still recommend Asus and if so which model?

TIA

None of the residential routers available out there currently utilize the QoS feature very well. It's doubtful you will ever have a need to prioritize such traffic on a home network anyway so don't make that your deciding issue when buying a router. I absolutely still recommend the Asus RTN56U, RTN65 or 66 class routers. Whatever your budget will allow but honestly for most folks the 56 is seriously overkill BUT is of course lacking the AC specification and 3.0USB but for most this isn't a deal breaker.

@bhn.net

All of the models are confusing. Do you know what the difference is in the Asus models you mention and the models with 3 detachable antennas? Which is better in your opinion? Or does it make a difference in the overall product external or internal? Do the hidden antenna models have more features? Just wondering.

Thanks

My personal experience with internal and external is that I find external antenna to perform better. I have the RT N66R
the "R" is the exact same as the "U". the "R" means that I got it from best buy. I love the router , it fixed some wireless issues I was having with the old dlink. I think both types have about the same features as far as I know.

I use my Asus RT-N66U for Wireless Mostly ( It has amazing Wireless Coverage ) and VOIP Service and then I have it wired to the other side of the house and use the Asus RT-N56U for Wired computers in the bedrooms and the LG blu ray player for netflix. Both Routers are rock solid stable and Performance is amazing.

I love my Asus RT-AC66U. Wireless coverage is phenomenal, performance is just rock-solid overall. I am getting 700 Mbps through my Cisco wireless bridge at the other end of the house via 5Ghz wifi from the RT-AC66U.

It just seems like antennas outside the router would be better but I don't have experience with that. And the AC routers either.

Rather not buy a Router and find out I should have gone with antenna or hidden antenna model or ac model.

Thanks

Buy the router you need today and think you will need 2 years from now and you will be fine. For MOST people the RTN56U is way more router than you will ever need (it's also what I own).

BTW, Which version of firmware do you have on the RTN56U. Stock, Tomato, DD-WRT ?

Thanks again.

If you think it will not out dated in 2 years and you own it, thats good enough for me. Thanks for the help.

Ive had my n66r for over a month now and ive noticed a small
memory leak. It started of with about 57MB use, its now at 61MB.
Its slowly creeping up. Im on stock .270 firmware. Anyone else notice this? I know its not much but memory leaks are a pet peeve with me.
