You folks with the Rtn56 and roku devices.....with current firmware.....need you to listen to pandora via your stereo and see if you hear cyclic glitches about once per minute...sometimes like a skip....sort of as if a packet was dropped.....but very regular. This will be wired or wireless.... |

I may have greatly reduced it by limiting offload to just TCP WAN/LAN and excluding UDP. Will know shortly I do know its annoying as hell. |

I bought the RT-N56U about 3 weeks ago (under $100 an Amazon) after reading about it here and love it! I had been using a cheap $30 Buffalo router and was having issues constantly. The Xbox would sign out at least twice an hour watching Amazon or Netflix, 2 of our laptops didn't get along well with it and I would have to re boot it constantly to get devices connected to it. Every time my son would try to download a game from Steam on his laptop, it would crash the router and he would have to bring his laptop out and connect directly to the router. All of my troubles are gone with the N56U! All 3 laptops are getting about 60/10, including my daughter's in the back bedroom that used to be lucky to get half that. At any given time, we could have a desktop, 3 laptops, 4 phones, Xbox, PS3, 2 Rokus, 2 tablets and a Chromecast connected and haven't had a single issue yet. I couldn't be happier. It's strange not rebooting routers daily (multiple times) and having to reconnect devises constantly haha |

Definitely. I skimmed through you talking about the different firmware upgrades, but the router has been working perfectly, so I kind of forgot about it haha. The router's interface is pretty straight forward. Is it simply downloading the .zip file and selecting it? |

BHNtechXpertBHN StaffPremium,VIP join:2006-02-16 Saint Petersburg, FL kudos:103 | reply to FTBoomer
well you need to unzip it first and then go into the administration area and select firmware update. One thing backup your config if you have made any port forwarding because this firmware relocates that stuff and will wipe it out the very first time you upgrade and do NOT I repeat do NOT update via a wireless connection...must be wired only. |

I haven't changed the configuration at all and my desktop is wired to the router. I'll probably do it tomorrow after I get home from work. Is the file a few posts up the firmware that you recommend that I use? Thanks |

telijah join:2013-04-22 Saint Petersburg, FL | Just ordered a RTN56U myself, decided not to go with that fancy ac1750, plus my price hookup fell out.
As for the custom firmware you've linked, is it just modified stock firmware, or built from the ground up? |

telijah join:2013-04-22 Saint Petersburg, FL | What exactly are the benefits of the Entware? I am only concerned, right now, about the reliability and better wifi speeds... I'm pretty familiar with putting custom firmware of previous routers I've had, but never used Entware or the likes. |

Each of those packages serves a specific need. In most cases and I really do mean the vast majority of folks you will never need or use them. It's just nice to have the ability should you need it. |

telijah join:2013-04-22 Saint Petersburg, FL | Got the N56U up and running. Dumb and quick question. I see these long steps for a clean install of something on that firmware (I haven't read all of it yet, so I do not know if this is a dumb question), but I notice it is a trx file, same as the ASUS firmware... is it just a matter of using the web gui's firmware update function and using the file from to Google Code page, or do I need to follow those steps on the wiki? |

Just use GUI and install... you will need to reconfigure your router afterwards as all the settings will be wiped. Make sure you upgrade from a wired connection ONLY. The universe will end in a firey death if you use wireless....oh and you WILL brick your router and I am so not coming over to unbrick it for you this weekend no matter how close you live to me or how many Redd Apples you offer -- ~All truth goes through three phases. And yeah, I've learned my lesson a long time ago to use wired connections when fiddlin with the routers. I see there still is not a full version of the latest for the 56u, odd I suppose. |
