anyone know what this is? box in ground

I was wondering if anyone here knew what was in this enclosure that's in the ground in the front corner of our yard(near street)? Wondering if its for a cable tv system although it says telephone on it? There isn't another box around for cable tv that I could see. Maybe it's shared between the two? We don't have a traditional phone line anymore. Also does it need to be covered from the elements(mostly rain as I noticed the lid wasn't properly in place which would allow rain water inside while doing some yard work(Surprised I never noticed it before). If its cable related it might explain why we've had a few periods of lots of short random cable outages in the fall/winter months usually after a big rain storm. Whatever is inside doesn't look to be in that great of shape to me

Its a fiber splice enclosure I believe. What does the cable say? Anything with the numbers 125/20mm or something similar on it?

It appears to be some sort of a Yellow Jacket that we used on a field trial in the early 70's in Seattle.

Ours were called Yellow Jackets because the tube on the left that is secured with a hose clamp was well.... Yellow. They are used for terminals with buried drops running in the bottom through those grommets.

A neighborhood in West Seattle formed a LID and paid to have everything buried and pretty street lights installed. In other words they wanted everything buried and nothing above ground but them lights.

These things were a PITA to build and we were only able to do one a day. Beyond the usual cable and drop prep, the closure had to sit upright and the air temp was supposed to be >70F. Try that in the winter in Seattle! Then you mix a 2 part epoxy, pour it in the grommet and then it had to set for at least 2 hrs to harden.

The problems ensued as the cover, in our case, only had one hose clamp. And since we used air core pic, if the cover was not installed properly water could seep in and start corrosion. And condensation would probably form in the cover and possibly bring on some more corrosion. And if there is any kind of moisture on the pic wire it would start breaking down because of electrolysis.

Another drawback is that once you build these you can't add any more drops.

As far as the handhole cover that is up to you. You could try calling the local landline phone co and let them know about the cover. If you do it is called a handhole cover.

Can't believe I still remember this stuff, its been more than 40 years.....

hrm it probably is fiber now that you mention it. I didn't look that closely at it to tell what it said on the cabling though. I seem to recall both the cable and telco's here pulling fiber a few years back on the other streets nearby were they had to tear up the side walk, etc to do it. Didn't do our street however. Also our local phone company has a long history of extensively using fiber and provides fiber to the home in lots of areas around town(however our street is not one yet).

Our neighborhood was built in the late 80's early 90's if that might have any baring on it. I did put the cover back in place however it's still not perfectly set due the roots/dirt on one side of the box blocking it from truly siting flush around the edge. At least it doesn't have a 2" gap anymore

There seems to be one of these telco boxes in front of every house along with a water main/meter box, then an electric co box. So if that box is just for phone stuff I'm actually curious were the cable pedestals/drops are. Everything is on the ground or buried here. There doesn't seem to be any green circular ped enclosures or boxes which is a bit odd.
