Unfortunately, I fear the no-gooders will use this game as an excuse to break some stuff and cause mayhem. Hopefully their number will be small and they will be contained & arrested. |

| Naw, 94 was a long time ago. Some anarchists may make a stink but I doubt you'll see the events of that night.
btw, I was maced , marched and got a few lungs full of gas in 94; right in the middle of it.
The root cause of the riot was a person falling from the transit wires, when assisted by paramedics/police they were surrounded by drunk "fans". Some fights nearby drew attention of the assisting Police who detained the combatants, that action lit a spark that was exploited; and the rest is history.
I remember the next morning my eyes were still bloodshot with huge bags under. |

If they lose....glad I don't live in downtown Vancouver.
I wonder if many from the east will be watching this game...will there be parties on the streets here in town? My guess in a hockey crazy place like Kitchener it will be pretty insane. Toronto? Probably not. -- If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. - Albert Einstein |

In the area they are showing a few are taking the hint and taking off after few gas grenades, but many remain I wonder what compels them to stay there other than simple stupidity. |

| reply to dennilfloss Calgary '04, Edmonton '06, Ottawa '07 ..... Nothing like what is happening in Vancouver. Thank goodness we won the gold medal at the Olympics or this would have been the world's impression of Vancouver. And the fans in jerseys watching the idiots in jerseys are just as guilty as those doing the damage as they are providing the encouragement to the idiots. Sad. | reply to dennilfloss I was stuck in the "riot" at the 2002 gnr show in vancouver. It was really about 20 people rioting, and 15,000 not knowing where to go.
Cops try to clear out areas, but they have no plan where to cattle people to. It sounds like they closed the bridges, so how are people supposed to get out? Shouldn't they just direct the crowds over one of the bridges out of town? |

There will ALWAYS be minor to major riots in Vancouver after a game 7 Stanley Cup loss, as long as hockey is still huge. This was free money on a bet and I would have bet the mortgage and all my relatives mortgages too! LOL Massive crowds in a town full of left wing wackos pretty much ensures it! Take THAT to da bank! |

Can't say I'm against that thought. In '94, the police were criticized for being too heavy-handed and going full-bore without giving the crowds a chance to disperse. Now they are being criticized for not doing so again. That's a can't-win situation for them.
That said, what surprised me was that there wasn't a stronger police presence before anything started, how long it took for the tactical unit / riot squads to get moving, why there weren't more RCMP units on standby for immediate deployment......it's almost like they figured Vancouver was going to win and it would be another happyfest like the gold medal game was, instead of planning for the outcome of a Canucks loss. -- The thoughts expressed in the above post are those of the poster, and can only be attributed to his state of mind at the time of posting.
