 | Alternative to Actiontec Q1000 Hi,
Is there any alternative to Actiontec Q1000 modem which I can buy from an online or brick and mortar store? I think the rent they want to charge me ($5/mo) is a bit too much for me.
Thanks, Farhan |

 | Very difficult to get q1000 from stores. I bought a zyxel q100 from ebay (which is also a vdsl modem). This worked fine. I would also look in craigslist.
In the end, the qwest tech left a brand new q1000 at my home - for free. I guess that they want to get rid of the modems with "Qwest" written on it - due to the upcoming name change |

 | reply to russoue You can pick up a used Actiontec or similar at Goodwill for $4.99. You might have to look around a lot to find the power supply for it but they are available too. |

| reply to russoue You don't even need the Q1000, unless you want to use its wireless capabilities. As was said, look around for a Q100 on CL or eBay (just looked on eBay, none available right now as I type this).
Wait! Here's a Q100 on CL in CO for only $25:

Tell them you'll PayPal or send them cash. -- If you need a re-format, just ask and I'll do it. If you don't need one, just give me 5 minutes with your computer, and you will. |

 | Actually, some people do actually *need* the Q1000.
I just moved and tried to set up service at my new place. Modem wouldn't connect. Tech came out - told me that with the fiber optic service in my area, only the Q1000 would work - my old modem that worked last week and has "QWest" written on it simply would not work with the network they have in my area.
He hooked up the Q1000 he had with him - worked great. After he left, I tried hooking up my older modem - nope, it still wouldn't work.
So if your area has the newer fiber optic stuff, an older modem may simply not work whatsoever. |

| The Q100 is not an older modem. I have VDSL2, 40/5 right now and am using the Q100 which works perfect for me, and would work fine for the OP.
Both the Q1000 and the Q100 are VDSL2 Modems. Either would work fine for the OP. -- If you need a re-format, just ask and I'll do it. If you don't need one, just give me 5 minutes with your computer, and you will. |

mot join:2011-08-27 Minneapolis, MN | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I use CenturyLlink as my DSL provider I currently have a 7 Mbps service using a Zyxel Q1000Z modm. I can upgrade to 12 Mbps service, at no extra charge, but Century Link tells me that Iwill need to rent, (at $5.00/month), an Actiontech Q1000 moden to get the 12 Mbps service. The question is: will the Zyxel Q1000Z modem work at 12 Mbps? |
|
 | I can't see why not. looks like the Q1000z is a vdsl2 modem.
I would call again & see if you get the same answer.

 | reply to russoue Hello Farhan,
At the time you order the service, you should be able to either lease or purchase or opt for no modem. The lease option is good because you have replacement support for as long as you lease it. The purchase option is competitive with any of the brick and mortar stores. If you prefer to purchase a used modem, just ask when ordering what the technology used is, VDSL VDSL2 ADSL, ATM etc. and you can purchase and use any modem compatible with the technology type in your area. If you have additional questions, please feel free to respond to us at TalkToUs@CenturyLink.com. Regards, Steve |
