| Network ALERT- DNS TO BE SHUT DOWN AUG.15th Event: Old legacy DNS will be retired/shutdown and not renewed!
dns1.stlsmo.sbcglobal.net and or 151.164.14.201 will be retired on 8/15/11 12:00 A.M.
At this time DNS traffic pulls show there are still a number of DSL customers using that IP, they probably hardcoded at some point and did not move to the anycast IPs.
Solution: Be sure to check your network hardware and ensure it is set to a different DNS IP before 8/15/11. At this time the solution is to move to the anycast IP's. The IP addresses are as follows:
68.94.156.1 68.94.157.1
Question and Answer segment below:
Q: if I leave the legacy DNS in there after 8/15/11 what will happen? A: You may get "Page cannot be displayed" or a Timeout when accessing pages. Most routers specify 2 DNS entries in their setup. So the 2nd one would be used.
Q: Does this affect UVerse or Uverse IP-DSL. A: UVerse and Uverse IP-DSL is or should be on the Anycast DNS system already. If you have Uverse VoIP services I can guarantee you are already pointing at anycast already as some of the sip credentials for your VoIP service comes from there.
Q: How do I make changes to my router? A: Contact your router manufacturer or their support site to adjust/configure this information.
Q: Will this affect my static IP addresses? A: No, it won't affect the static IP's you are assigned. However it will affect how you look up say www.yahoo.com. All you would have to do is take out the entry in your network equipment above (if present) and replace it with an anycast DNS IP.
Q: I use Opendns, how is this affected by it? A: OpenDNS and others are 3rd party DNS providers, this action will have no impact to them or you.
To mods: you can sticky this till on or after 8/15/11 to 8/20/11. At that time it can be retired as it is only a general notice. -- If you have a topic in the direct forum please reply to it or a post of mine, I get a notification when you do this. | I use a Motorola 2210 Modem and I DON'T have a router, direct connection from the modem to my PC.
This is what's showing on my modem page:
DNS Servers 68.94.156.1 dnsr1.sbcglobal.net 151.164.8.201 dns1.ksc2mo.sbcglobal.net
will it automatically switch 151.164.8.201 to a new DNS server or will I just be left with ONLY ONE DNS server and
if that were to happen, having ONLY ONE DNS server, will that affect my internet speed and service?
thanks |

| said by IH8ATTNOW :will it automatically switch 151.164.8.201 to a new DNS server or will I just be left with ONLY ONE DNS server and ... I'm pretty sure that the DNS servers are assigned during PPPoE negotiation. If your current PPPoE session stays up, it won't be reassigned. But if you then reboot your modem you should get a new PPPoE session with a different DNS assignment.
In short, if you are still seeing that DNS server on Aug 14th, it will be time for you to power off your modem, let it sit for a couple of minutes, then power it back on. -- AT&T Uverse; Zyxel NBG334W router (behind the 2wire gateway); openSuSE 11.4; firefox 4.0 |

| reply to IH8ATTNOW What's more, you are using a different address than the one that is to be shut down. Note the third octet; you have 8 but the one being shut down is 14. That's not to say that 14 is the only one to be shut down, however. -- Jim Kyle |

I suspect the 151.164.8.201 is in kansas city, MO and is not subject to this notice. This notice is primarily for Saint Louis, MO area residents, and/or any others that use that DNS IP address. -- If you have a topic in the direct forum please reply to it or a post of mine, I get a notification when you do this. | reply to David if your modem maintains the PPPoE connection, the most you may have to do when 8/15 rolls around is basically turn off your modem, and back on. or for you masterminds with routers, disconnect and reconnect.
This notice is mainly geared to people who may have "hard coded" this DNS endpoint in their own personal routers and CPE.
If you do not do your own DNS customization or IP changes, this is very likely to have no impact to you. -- If you have a topic in the direct forum please reply to it or a post of mine, I get a notification when you do this. Koetting Ford, Granite City, illinois... YOU'RE FIRED!!

 | then I'm okay because all I did was plug my Motorola 2210 in when I got my DSL activated and that's it.
I didn't mess with the settings and I don't have a router.

 | reply to David Wow! Just now?!? This recursive server should have been shut off and retired from service YEARS AGO! In fact, I seem to recall removing all the stand alone resolvers from service, in 2006? That was the WHOLE REASON for deploying the Anycast resolvers. Why is it still running? Who the hell left it online this long?
I'm not surprised though ... with the likes of Lerch and Darth Felo running things at ol' at&t. So happy I got the heck out of that hellhole, and from under the thumb of Darth Felo.
oh well. I'm all too happy, to watch at&t shoot itself in the foot. I don't do business with at&t, I don't have the under performing at&t common stock anymore, and they can't touch my pension.
Death to at&t! Down with Ma' Bell and ALL her bastard babies. Lerch & Darth Felo can eat my shorts! |

I was just being nice about it.
typically this might apply to people that didn't bother to update their routers or leave them running for years on end and never update them. This might also be "hardcoded" in 3rd party routers. If I had to keep the AT&T line you should have been off them quite a long time ago. -- If you have a topic in the direct forum please reply to it or a post of mine, I get a notification when you do this. If I had to keep the AT&T line you should have been off them quite a long time ago. You misinterpret my response. ALL the stand alone DNS resolvers were shut and powered off, YEARS ago, because of an issue in BIND. Since Anycast was ready, my project to gracefully notify, monitor and remove those devices from service was terminated and a management decision to just turn them off was made. It was that, or let clowns on the .net poison caches and send customers to malicious sites.
I'm curious how this one, lone stand alone resolver got missed? Given that such a BIG todo was made out of the risk, consequences and so forth.
I'm all for at&t being a responsible company and doing notifications. That's super! Out of character, but super!
I was just noticing that the node should have been removed from service, several years ago. |

| reply to David I think certain businesses were still using it for static IP address purposes truthfully. The guy that works on DNS these days (the anycast version and such) planned the death day for the box.
He figured by then it will handle less than 1,000 requests a day total which if I understand correctly (and I could have it wrong) is quite a few from what I got.
Sometimes other people in the STL area might use it for diagnostics and such. -- If you have a topic in the direct forum please reply to it or a post of mine, I get a notification when you do this. Koetting Ford, Granite City, illinois... YOU'RE FIRED!!

 | reply to David I believe this affected New Zealand's internet today, as we had a major outage to all international traffic at the precise time this DNS Server was said to be taken down, which affected a large number of people across all Internet Service Providers. All going again now finally, however. |
