tlion join:2011-06-17 Bethel, CT | [help] Constant dropping of DSL in Danbury, CT I'm beginning to get very frustrated with AT&T, every time I call I get 'transferred' resulting in a hang up.
Anyway, for the past few months, my internet will periodically go down, i.e. the light for DSL will start blinking red and has to reconnect. It only takes about a minute to reconnect, but it is very inconvenient.
I had a look outside to the telephone box thing and noticed it was completely mangled. I wish I had a picture but it was just horrific. I had AT&T come out and replace it, and while it fixed the issue with our telephone line, our DSL connection is still crummy.
For one reason or another, we are unable to switch to U-Verse, so that stinks. Our modem seems fine, however we used to keep our wireless phone on top of it because of a lack of space, and some reading I've done shows me that that is a terrible idea. I've tried all the basic things like filters (which have been installed since we've bought the dang service) as well as restarting the modem.
We usually have one computer connected through ethernet and two-four wireless devices running.
Can anyone help me figure out what is wrong? I suspect we may need new wiring, as our house is far off the road and they had to lay underground wires. AT&T keeps sending people out to help, but they always say there isn't a problem when they test, which makes me question if it is the house's wiring.

| reply to tlion If they ran tests on your line and it looks good, then consider this: What kind of modem/router are you using? I had the 2Wire 2701HG B, and it was the gateway, not the dsl line. Went through 2 of them, with the exact same results. The phone was fine, dsl ran great except...periodically, the gateway would lose synch, got the flashing red light, then after resetting it, I'd be up and running until the next disconnect. Tech support both on line and out to my house said that they could find no problems
AT&T does sell and support the Netopia 3347 gateway modem that they tout for "business" DSL, but many here will tell you that it is the most reliable unit for home dsl as well, and the price is the same as for the 2wire. -- Deeds, not words | | DrStrangeTechnically feasiblePremium join:2001-07-23 West Hartford, CT kudos:1 | For what it's worth, I'm been seeing similar behavior from my 2701HG-B, which is connected to a non-AT&T service.
Every couple of days, out of the blue, it disconnects and reconnects. The log shows 'ERR DMA'.
I've tested for everything from EMI and RFI to excessive TCP connections to paranormal activity, and there's nothing here.
From what I've read here and elsewhere, it's the gateway.
Purchasing a 3347 is on my to-do list. | | Reviews:

| reply to tlion Echoing a couple of others here, but it sounds to me as if the 2Wire 2701 you're using is going bad. This tends to happen over time, aggravatingly. I had a similar problem for some time, to the point where I could only hold sync for 30 minutes at a time at best and even light traffic would knock me offline for a minute. After replacing the gateway, though, everything has worked more or less fine. It's not an issue with the line, just the hardware given.
Whenever possible, try replacing the 2Wire modem with a Motorola 3447 modem/router or a standalone DSL modem connected to a standalone router. | | | reply to tlion I strongly advise all to invest in a Netopia 3347. Mine has been running rock solid, when connected over the past two plus years.
The quality control for 2 Wire has took a dive for their 2701 and higher series. These last at most two years before erratic behaviour is experiences. I heard instances of these lasting less than a year if the end user is doing a lot of streaming and gaming on their connections. | | PeteC2Got Mouse?Premium,MVM join:2002-01-20 Bristol, CT kudos:5 Reviews:

| BTW, for what it is worth, and I am not hyping any one product, I went to a Netgear DGN 2200 gateway, and get great connectivity, no "drops" like the 2Wire 2701 HG-B, and have 11N connectivity, which is unimportant for a 6Mbps dsl signal, but comes in handy with my intra-network communications between devices. Only issue there is that AT&T will not recognize 3d party hardware if you are having issues, but that is why I keep a 2701 HG-B laying around...
Equally, you can go with a separate dsl modem and router. The problem with the 2701 HG-B appears to be in the modem portion of the gateway, not the router or wireless function, as I would get these disconnects whether wireless, or plugged in directly through Cat 5e. -- Deeds, not words | | sdfox7Premium join:2011-05-07 Bethel, CT | said by PeteC2:BTW, for what it is worth, and I am not hyping any one product, I went to a Netgear DGN 2200 gateway, and get great connectivity, no "drops" like the 2Wire 2701 HG-B, and have 11N connectivity, which is unimportant for a 6Mbps dsl signal, but comes in handy with my intra-network communications between devices. I have also recommended the Wireless-N Netgear routers, but there are some on this site that would hesitate to recommend a device that is not officially supported by AT&T:

Makes you wonder what to think of their "supported" 2701 HG-B which is absolute junk! That is why I keep a 2701HG B in reserve, so if I need AT&T support for a line issue or such, I can swap the 2Wire back in just to keep 'em happy!
However, as others mentioned, the AT&T supported Netopia 3347 is a fine alternative as well. Frankly I only went with the NetGear since at the same price (around $99), it is an 11N router...but of course at 6Mbps dsl, no big woof there anyway...
It is a real shame, at any rate. The 2Wire 2701HG B really is not a cheaply designed/built gateway, it should have been a real winner...the build/looks are solid, it runs much cooler than many gateways, and has great interface option, but the damn modem portion just seems way too prone to dropping connections...I had always hoped that a firmware update might correct that, but it has never happened -- Deeds, not words | | | The irony is that if you purchase them both new from AT&T, the 2Wire 2701HG-B and the Netopia/Motorola 3347-02-1022 cost essentially the same amount, but you get far more from your money with the 3347- it is a much more solid and reliable piece of equipment. I would not trade mine for a whole truckload of 2Wire's.
The 2701 is much more stylish (almost looks like something that Apple would have designed), but a pretty case does not mean that it will work well. | |
