 | Need To Upgrade To New Forum I think you guys need to upgrade to a new forum. I visit many forums and DSLReports.com is by far the worst forum I've ever used. It's not user friendly as well, and half the time coding doesn't work the way it should. |

| Just what is your question? This forum is specifically for asking questions about how to use the site, and other pertinent inquiries... "How do I do this?" or "Where can I find that?" It's intended for people who would like a little help using the site. I think you've misunderstood the purpose in posting here. If you have a question, I'm sure someone will be able to provide you with a suitable answer. Perhaps you'd be better served if your posting were made in »Rants, Raves, and Praise or, perhaps in »Site Feature Requests -- "I am a man of fixed and unbending principles, the first of which is to be flexible at all times. |

Re: Need To Upgrade To New Forum He's not asking a question, just telling this forum software sucks. I personally believe that it is very well suited for its intended use and integrated nicely with every other aspect of this site. You know... opinions are like socks... |

Just because DSLR is unique as forums go does not mean it needs to be the same as others.
I like the uniqueness of DSLR. While it is not that same as others it is not hard to figure out. As whole I find DSLR very user friendly. It has a lot of features that other forums do not have. The forum layout fits DSLR. It is DSLR's signature, it is what makes this DSLReports.com. It just wouldn't be the same if it was that same as other forums. I have a feeling you're trolling or just saying this to get on the nerves of someone you know might be offended by it.
This is probably the best forum software I've ever used. It's very clutter free with very little extraneous junk that you see on the vast majority of forums. -- I am the Flying Photog, see my website accordingly named Flyingphotog.com. User known formerly as zakooldude. |

 | reply to geokilla I don't know what other sites you are comparing to but DSLR is one of the more user friendly sites around, navigation around the site is pretty easy. What coding do you speak of that doesn't work well.
One good thing DSLR has that many other sites don't is threads age off after some period of no activity, so there is no replying to a thread months or years old. |

The search feature isn't great, and neither is the preferences menu, but overall it's not bad at all. Huh? Search is great! I'm not sure what you mean by "preferences" menu. But what is ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE HERE AND NOWHERE ELSE I HAVE EVER BEEN ON THE NET is how Justin insists on crippling both Fx's and Chrome's ability to have a DECENT SIZE TEXT BOX HERE! I truly HATE having to type in a TINY box. That happens NOWHERE ON THE NET EXCEPT THIS SITE where my browsers are DELIBERATELY CRIPPLED by Justin. That was not the case here until recently if one had an extension for Fx to enlarge the text box (starting with Fx 4 this ability is built into Fx so no need now for an extension) or for Chrome where it is built in ON EVERY SITE EXCEPT THIS ONE WHERE IT IS DELIBERATELY CRIPPLED.
The worst irony is that if I post here ANON then my browsers are NOT crippled. Since when does it make sense that ANON posters have better software here than us members? -- When governments fear people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. Thomas Jefferson |

1 edit | reply to geokilla Agreed, this is the worst forum that I've ever used by far.
The difference between links and buttons here is schizophrenic at best. It's like someone decided to add a new feature, then flipped a quarter on whether it should be a link or button. Why is reply and "qreply" (spell out please?) buttons, but Print and Edit a link? Why is the reply on news articles an image instead of an actual button? Why are page numbers links, but Next Page a button? It's rather user hostile.
And the recent hack shows just how low the security is around here. Plain text passwords? Seriously? You are doing it wrong. That was bad practice 15 years ago. Passwords should be hashed and salted. I was also tipped off whenever I typed my password wrong and it said something about it being off on account of case.
I have noticed that the logout link is triggered by an HTTP GET request (should this be a button?). If someone embedded the logout link in an image in their signature, and started posting everywhere, everyone who would look at it would be logged out whether they wanted or not.
I would fully support a move to something more standard, like vBulletin or phpBB. Even implementing OpenID would tighten up security. |
