Modem sync speed drop frequently

I am using Bellsouth 3Mbps DSL and have been experiencing this problem for several years. I sometimes lose connection. The connection will also drop to a low speed (200kbps) frequently. Most of the time rebooting the modem gets me back to full speed. I contacted AT&T but new profile or changing modem will not help. The AT&T rep says it may be a common problem with my area.

Now my question is: can I setup the modem or my router to automatically reboot the modem when the speed drops, or at scheduled time?

I can use either a Westell 6100 or Actiontec GT701D modem setup in bridged mode. My router is linksys WRT54G and a linksys WRT320N as a wireless access point.

Thanks.

That is usually due to either a line problem or a house wiring problem.

I suggest that you put your Westell 6100 into router mode (PPPoE handled on the modem). You can change the LAN ip range for the 6100, so that it is different from what your linksys router uses.

The main benefit of having the Westell in router mode, is that you can easily check the statistics. The statistics, and how they change over time, may give some indication of what kind of problem you have.

Would you like me to move this to our AT&T Southeast forum for additional help with this?
