| Motorola adapter connected directly to cable modem I have a business line in a home office. I recently tried to call a customer in another state and each time I tried, the Motorola adapter crashed. I called Vonage and they insisted that I plug the Motorola directly to the cable modem instead of to my router. The tech set up my router as DMZ with a 192.168.102.100 address so that I could connect to my LAN remotely.
So far I can't do that. It seems to me for that to work I would need a couple of static IP addresses (?). I just have a residential cable modem.
Has anybody gotten that to work? I'm not sure what the check had me change on my router, but if I can't connect remotely I want to put everything back the way it was with my router connected directly to the cable modem. (Calling that weird customer's number crashes the Motorola no matter where I have it placed.) -- "It's a joke, People! What the hell?!! Mike Destefano |

(Calling that weird customer's number crashes the Motorola no matter where I have it placed.) I have no problems connecting my Vonage VT2442 directly to my SMCD3G. It works just fine in that mode as either a standalone ATA, or I can connect other devices behind it. I do currently have business class service with static IP addresses, but in the past I have used the same Motorola VT2442 router directly connected to both a standard Comcast cable modem, and also directly connected to bridge modems with AT&T and Covad DSL circuits.
If you want help with troubleshooting, please post specific information such as the model number of the Motorola adaptor, details on exactly what is connected to what, and screen shots or detailed descriptions of the Motorola adapter's setup (both WAN and LAN). Without that, all anyone can do is post wild guesses and waste everyone's time. My initial wild guess is that you have a Motorola adapter that is getting ready to go belly up. -- We can never have enough of nature. | Okay, here's a couple of screen shots. I first posted this because I have line testing going on with DSLReports and it couldn't connect to my dynamic host name from dyn-dyn. I couldn't figure out how my router could function as a DMZ with an internal LAN ip address. Maybe the Motorola is forwarding traffic to the router? Just now I connected to my shell account in another state and tried to connect to my external IP address with lynx. It couldn't connect because of javascript issues, but it could read the beginning text of my Windows Home Server web page, which would indicate that the router is indeed getting traffic through the Motorola and able to port-forward.
If anything doesn't look right with these shots, I would appreciate an update (I agree that there's probably a problem with my aged Motorola): -- "It's a joke, People! What the hell?!! Mike Destefano |

1 edit | Everything that I see in the screen-shots you posted look as I would expect. If that configuration isn't working, then there is likely a problem with the VT1005. The fact that the VT1005 appears to have successfully registered the phone numbers says that it is connected OK to the ISP's network, but possibly its NAT router function is not working properly (or as you expect).
One problem I can think of is that your initial testing was from your LAN, and possibly the VT-1005 does not handle NAT loopback gracefully. When I have used my VT2442 as the primary gateway router, I have noticed that it does not properly handle NAT loopback. My Linksys RV082 does allow the use of public IP addresses and/or hostnames from its LAN when it is the primary gateway router. I suspect that when your WRT300 is the primary gateway router, that is why things work OK for you, but with the VT1005 as the primary gateway router, you have problems.
FWIW, the Comcast SMCD3G Business Class router also has NAT loopback problems (it is a fairly common symptom with many SOHO routers).
And speaking of your phone numbers, I see that you masked your IP address in the screen captures, but you did not mask your phone numbers. If that was an oversight, you may want to correct that to keep the junk phone call rate down. -- We can never have enough of nature. | Thanks for the insights. I think I'll try getting a new adapter from Vonage. I connected from outside with the lynx (text) web browser to get around loopback issues, and it did work, so my router seems to be accessible from outside. Maybe the problem with my dslreports line testing was just that my dyn-dyn address hadn't updated? Or possibly the Motorola is a little old and flaky at this point. (Arrgghh. I'll get that phone number.) Thanks for your help. -- "It's a joke, People! What the hell?!! Mike Destefano |

If you are using the DynDNS client that is built-in to the Linksys router, the DynDNS update problem is probably that the DynDNS IP address has been updated with your private 192.168.102.100 IP address instead of your public IP address. That is a bug in many Linksys routers using stock Linksys firmware (actually not just Linksys routers). My Linksys RV082 has that problem, and my Vonage supplied Linksys RTP300 and Motorola VT2442 routers used to have that problem until Vonage replaced their stock firmware with their own custom firmware.
Check your host update log on the DynDNS web site, or just do a DNS query on your DynDNS hostname to see if that is the problem. Shown below is a DNS query result for a router that has that particular problem:
C:\>nslookup dcs-ps1.dyndns-ip.com
Server: dcs-srv.dcs-net
Address: 192.168.9.2
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: dcs-ps1.dyndns-ip.com
Address: 192.168.9.9
Here is a DNS query result from a router that does it right, even though it is behind another NAT router:
C:\>nslookup dcs-ap2.dyndns-ip.com
Server: dcs-srv.dcs-net
Address: 192.168.9.2
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: dcs-ap2.dyndns-ip.com
Address: 74.240.253.230

| Right now, with nslookup, my dyndns is working perfectly. Maybe a glitsch or the Motorola was flaky. At least I know my setup is correct for the Motorola in front of my router. Thank you. I am going to try to get a new adapter from Vonage. -- "It's a joke, People! What the hell?!! Mike Destefano |
