I think it may have been our WiFi router - it was an early mode D-link DIR-655 but I had upgraded the firmware. It seemed to work better on friends/family's 802.11n networks.

I have the same problem with samsung galaxy s phone and the same router.
It's not a motorola droid x problem. -- I found the key to success but somebody changed the lock.
