 | Thank, Julius! "'While we have made significant progress, the report shows that approximately 28 percent of rural residents still lack access to the kind of broadband that most Americans take for granted,' said FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski in a statement."
Someone should tell Mr. Genachowski that I live in a nice neighborhood 5-6 blocks away from downtown in a city of 400,000+ and the best I can get from AT&T is 3M. Thankfully, I guess, Charter offers much faster service; but then I'm essentially dealing with a monopoly for "the kind of broadband that most Americans take for granted." The entire broadband landscape in the US is a joke. It's not just a rural problem. |

 | I can't get anything. Time Warner stops cable half mile away, no DSL, no WISP, just shitty capped 3G. |

Maybe is where they are going to dig and pour concrete for a DSLAM cabinet? for the fiber they just layed down? I really hope so. |

| They have actually been doing some work out my way as well. Coincidence. I got a letter saying DSL was now available the other day, I checked the website and called, they said it's still not available, lol. At this point I give up, fuck all of them. I'll have moved already by the time it ever makes it out to my house now, which I'm planning to do within a year. -- Core i7 920 @ 3.5ghz | OCZ Obsidian 6GB 1600mhz DDR3 RAM | EVGA X58 tri SLI-LE mobo | EVGA GTX 570 | Antec 750w PSU | OCZ Vertex 2 120GB SSD | WD Black 1TB HDD | Antec 1200 Case | G15 keyboard | G9x mouse | G35 Headset | Asus 23" LED-LCD |

 | You don't have internet access in Lancaster? You're so close to Canal Winchester and Columbus. Oh well, that's at&t for you! |

| Nope! Time Warner cable lines stop down our road, about half a mile away from my house and 15 other homes. At&t DSL isn't anywhere even nearby, and U-Verse at the closest point is about 2 miles away from my house. Yea you're right I'm really close to Canal and only about 20 miles out from Columbus, it's quite pathetic actually that so little of the area is covered. -- Core i7 920 @ 3.5ghz | OCZ Obsidian 6GB 1600mhz DDR3 RAM | EVGA X58 tri SLI-LE mobo | EVGA GTX 570 | Antec 750w PSU | OCZ Vertex 2 120GB SSD | WD Black 1TB HDD | Antec 1200 Case | G15 keyboard | G9x mouse | G35 Headset | Asus 23" LED-LCD |

In fact, that "someone" is YOU. Mr. Genachowski job is working for you. Write Mr. Genachowski a letter or even an email, carefully explaining the situation, and that you believe you are among the uncounted millions that make his estimate incorrect. If more people would directly contact their repersentitives/public servents with INDIVIDUAL written compliants, the work the gov't does would be much more to their liking. INDIVIDUAL letters have far more effect than group inspired mass form mail/email type contact campaigns, and even corparate "donations". Far too many sit back and complain that "They are all corrupt (untrue) or "someone else should tell them", the problem is that most don't and so the majority of what they hear/base their response on is what the paid lobbists say. If you want it different, LET THEM HEAR YOU! |

 | That's an excellent point. Thank you for the reminder.
In the meantime, I've already gone on the FCC broadband map and posted corrections for the actual speeds and services that are offered to my home. Despite my corrections, the map still lists Verizon as a DSL provider despite the fact they have zero presence in the area. They also list 6-10 M AT&T service for my block, which is a joke. When I moved in last summer, AT&T sold me a max 3M connection. Around November, the connection became highly unreliable and I finally dumped it in April after I got the TOS change notice which implemented caps. |

Even if you don't have service now, they plan on having 96-98% of the US covered by 2013, so you're bound to have it soon. |

 | I considered this option, LTE actually covers the west half of my town, go figure I live in the eastern half. What's the date on their new data plans? I've already thought about this option, may do that soon. |

| reply to Duramax08 Well, congratulations! AT&T will soon provide you with upgraded DSL deployed on last-generation copper wiring! And then they'll call it U-verse, made with 100% fiber! Isn't that lovely?
Sarcasm aside, it's rather sad when we Americans get excited about a telco deploying shitty FTTN, that can only reach speeds of 24/3.. Meanwhile the folks in East Asia are enjoying their 100/100 symmetrical connections for $40. |

rradina join:2000-08-08 Chesterfield, MO | reply to tman852 AT&T->SBC->Southwestern Bell has been saying since 1998 that DSL is coming. The CO has been wired for 13 years but they haven't bothered putting any RTs close enough to matter. I'm about 21,000 feet from the CO to which I'm connected. Of course there are three other COs that are very close but they were added for businesses. I think they are pure fiber. |

1 edit | reply to tman852 They're implementing them July 7. I'm thinking about locking in a 2 year contract myself since my family's already on Verizon. I guess the one plus side of Verizon's caps is that the network will never slow down now. |

If you want to use Verizon for data on a PC or somethig like that it's always been capped. $50 for 5 GB and $80 for 10 GB with $10 per GB overgage. |

 | I know, I'd just tether it. I'm not on a contract with my current phone service or internet service so I could drop those anytime for this. |
