DSL Speedstream 5360 not connecting to Linksys E1200 Router

I'm trying to connect a new Linksys E1200 router to an old Speedstream 5360 modem with Earthlink DSL on a PC with XP and have been unsuccessful.
I called Linksys but nothing worked, then they told me to call Earthlink and ask that the modem be set to Bridge Mode only to be told by Earthlink that it's already in Bridge Mode.
I have no idea what to do next.
When the router is connected, my network connections tells me that LAN is connected, but the Earthlink DSL icon says "not connected." When I connect directly to the modem, the LAN says "not connected" but the DSL icon says connected and I'm able to access the internet.
Please help!

You no longer use the Earthlink Broadband Icon when adding a Router like a Linksys or even a D-Link or a Netgear. The Earthlink Broadband Icon you used to double click is PPPoE and the Linksys Router blocks PPPoE so the Earthlink Broadband Icon will never work and is no longer needed after setting up the Router with your Earthlink Username and Password (the new PPPoE connection).

You simple connect the new Router behind the 5360 and setup the Linksys for PPPoE. Then you setup your PC to use the existing LAN connection to the Linksys to obtain a Private IP from the Router and the Router now obtains your Public Earthlink IP. Real simple setup as the 5360 has no settings and no end user interfaces to configure.

Enjoy.

Thanks for the reply. Could you provide me with some simple instructions for how to do what you describe in your 2nd paragraph? I.e. How to set computer to use LAN etc? When I setup the router I did just try to access the web directly without using the Earthlink connect, but I didn't change any computer settings.
I'm new at this. Thank you so much!

Sure, you setup the PC for DHCP (Automatically Obtain IP Address under TCP/IP properties.

quote:
1. From the Start menu, select Settings and then Network Connections, or select Control Panel and then double-click on the Network Connections icon.
2. Right-click on the Local Area Connection icon and select Properties.
3. In the General tab, select (highlight) Internet Protocols (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button.
4. Check the radio buttons for Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically.
5. Click the OK button and close the window.

You run the Network Wizard under Network Locations and tell it to use the existing Ethernet aka LAN connection.

You setup the Linksys as seen in the image below:
