1 edit | Outage today in Milford NH Internet was out for most of the day today. Looking at router logs - PPPoE authentication failure. Finally came back about 6PM.
Not sure how widespread this was. May of just been a problem with the local DSLAM.
Interestingly cannot access fairpoint.com or fairpoint.net, server times out. myfairpoint.net is fine. Looks like routing is failing within the Fairpoint network.

 | DSL was out in Manchester when I got home at 3pm until 9:45pm. When I called Fairpoint there was a recording about the outage affecting Maine, NH and Vermont. |

 | reply to tschmidt Maine, NH and VT are all down.
A power outage that affected Fairpoint Communications network operations center in Manchester, N.H., this afternoon is causing all sorts of problems for the company and its customers in northern New England.
Jeff Nevins, spokesman for Fairpoint, said the outage occurred around 1:20 p.m. Monday. When power was restored it produced a surge that knocked out the companys internal Internet and telephone services in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.
Nevins said the power surge also caused an unknown number of Fairpoint customers in Maine and Vermont to lose their voicemail and Internet services. Nevins said he does not know when those customer accounts will be restored.
Further complicating the issue was the fact that the companys repair center telephone line (1-866-984-1611) is malfunctioning.
Elizabeth LaRocca, spokeswoman for Public Services of New Hampshire, said the power outage, which took place around 1:20 p.m., affected a small area in downtown Manchester. Power was restored at 2:40 p.m.
LaRocca said the outage was caused by a malfunctioning underground cable. |

| reply to tschmidt Incredible! Hasn't Fairpoint ever heard of uninterruptable power supplies, motor generators, surge protectors, etc. External surges should never get to the computers, and power losses should never interfere with a public utility (except the power company).

| said by Kirby Smith:External surges should never get to the computers, and power losses should never interfere with a public utility Yup I agree. Overall my DSL has been more reliable with FairPoint than Verizon but it does appear the FairPoint network is much more vulnerable then one would think.
The New York fiber cut a month or so ago that degraded much of New England is another example of network fragility.
David Brooks had an article in the Nashua Telegraph today about the problem.

 | This demonstrates very poor network design. A single power failure in Manchester should not be able to take down all DSL service in Maine, NH and VT.
But 2 other positive points... 1) My overall up-time with Fairpoint has been much better than it was with Verizon. 2) It was VERY refreshing to hear the "system is down" recording when I called the DSL trouble number. With Verizon I had to spend an hour going over my browser settings with an offshore operator before the operator would even consider that there might be a network problem, in accordance with their flow chart. |
