Re: Physical media hardly dead

said by hottboiinnc:

And if NF doesn't change their business plan and innovate they will go the way of Blockbuster soon. Content companies want $$$ and they'll get it or NF will start losing some very nice movies that they like to rent.

RedBox is the only one that really has the $$$ to take on Netflix in the actual media area. RedBox as LITTLE to no employees- unless you count the ones that stock the boxes - which they hire contractors to do that (always looking on Craiglist) and they're owned by CoinStar. About the only way you can cash in your change now since banking fees have gone up for that now too. RB pays a few grand to a store to but a box...connect it to the Internet and BOOM! its done. No need for distro centers.

Without government regulation to force the internet to be unrestricted and uncapped netflix streaming will die no matter what. The only thing Netflix can do is basically license their name to be used by the movie studios or just sign away most of their profits. If they do not do this then the studios will simply charge netflix a fortune for content, team up with ISPs/TV companies to create their own online video streaming site, and then use that ISP partnership to allow their site to be cap free while netflix users will be forced in a low GB cap. Netflix streaming will die pretty damn quick at no fault of their own.
Content providers and ISPs must be separate. All an ISP should be is a dumb pipe to the internet.

The only way to save netflix streaming is net neutrality so that all the content providers will have to compete evenly on price.

IMHO,

Understand that Netflix will:
-acquire its own studios (small independents)
-provide content EXCLUSIVE to Netflix
-There is a "substantial" user base and integrated devices with Netflix.
-Netflix is considered a household brand name, like cable...
-Advertising is coming, regrettably
-the subscriber base will allow more leverage to get its own content (much like artists and iTunes...) MPAA is in for it, they are just a slow monolith using politics...instead of brains.

Movie tickets are $10+ around me. More for 3D flicks (and few and far between are worth risking $15 per person to see, along with the headaches).
Since studios are now considering their own streaming-models (a big fail, waste of revenue IMHO) to release, it will be like there are (%$&@!) channels of TV (to choose from...)

The consumer wants an affordable price media. They will pay, but not be gouged.

(I dropped the media part for now. I don't like paying $9/month for a late fee ... sometimes I have a DVD sitting there for a week or more before I can even watch it! Add the bluray cost --- a BS cost if ever there was one as there is no HDDVD competitor, and BR titles are now released more, re-boots, and lower cost. )

In all, Netflix will continue media rental because they can get those titles. They can't get streaming titles as much do to rights and ... dare I repeat... greed.
(Rentals help mail but add overhead. Streaming saves overhead, but ISPs want a cut. Studios want their 1st run deals with Dish, OnDemand and media sales. What a box Netflix opened!... Atleast Blockbuster got its nads kicked!)

We shall change our service to streaming only. $8 per month for DVD's is too high imo.

Gee just 2 yeara go I was paying $4 to rent just ONE dvd at Movie Gallery.

Generally we don't watch DVD's, our last check out was about 3 months ago. We shall locate it, return it, and cease the DVD plan. It would cost less over a year to purchase a DVD as wanted every few months.

The last DVD we bought was How to Train Your Dragon. It has been recorded to 2 of our DVR's, and we haven't used the DVD since purchase.

Poopflix cost me my job of 18 years.I really do wish they would die or better yet why don't you people get off your ass and take a nice walk to the local video store even once a week to give local economy a boost.
The more the studios gauge Poopflix the happier I am and I am sure my ex-boss is.
Come on down to Videoport in Portland,ME where human beings still serve you and taxes still goes to the state and the city of Portland.

You cried about this last time. Blockbuster was the best thing to happen - it revolutionized the rental industry and brought tremendous benefits to customers. Netflix took it a giant step further.

But in regards to your loss, do you feel the same way about Apple, last I checked they are renting movies now too.

just rip the dvds and convert. Then either load the movies to your device or put them on a flash drive if you don't have the space.

Not a good idea, unless you want your stuff seized at Customs. They are now checking electronic devices for porn, illegal content and copyright infringment at US borders. Don't cross any borders with illegally ripped material!

You know if you've worked in a video store for 18 years you have MUCH bigger issues than Netflix.

You know why we don't get off our asses? Ok try not charging an arm and a leg. Try actually having videos in I want to watch instead of wasting my time and gas money? If I bring in a movie 30 minutes before close make the damn worker check it in instead of charging me a late fee because it didn't get checked in until the next day because the worker was in too big of a hurry to get off work.

How can they prove it was copied illegally? There's no discernible difference between the "digital copy" of Toy Story 3 on my iPhone and the DVD ripped copy on my daughter's iPod.

You could take all your change to a casino and cash it in, casinos still have coin sorting machines since slot machines used to take and pay out coins.

Oh so you admit it's illegal and you still do it?

Thanks to the ISPs that like the cap idea.
Add to that, some of the studios won't let Netflix stream the movies.
So DVD is the only option in that case.
I like both methods.

One reason why when I buy a DVD, I look to see if it has a digital copy. I'd rather carry digital copies, vs the physical media.
Granted you can rip any DVD into a usable digital copy, but that is something I haven't tried.

My "Bullshit meter" is pegged in the red. You are going to need to link a credible source before I would ever believe that Customs has the time to have every person boot up their electronic device and stand around while it is scanned and the data analyzed.

Not "every". It is enough to get an idiot agent to start looking randomly at your stuff, not like your face, confiscate your device and then take their sweet time to charge you with anything they could think of.

Happened a lot in Russia, now common practice in the "land of the free".

This is the trend of modern day capitalism. Take take take, give nothing back. And you're absolutely right, the local businesses, local governments, and local people are all being scammed out of their hard earned money, and will soon have to sell their "souls" back to these people just to get a bite to eat.

I give it about 5 more years before North Americans see the final collapse of our "Western Empire" Didn't anyone take notes about the Roman Empire in high-school History class? /snicker
