I have the 3mbps service from earthlink which subs it out to verizon. I currently use a zyxel P-660R-ELNK modem and its like 8 years old. I curently use a linksys e3000 with it. I am looking for a new dsl modem that has a 2-4 port with the feature if I want to go wireless I could get on the internet. I have done a experiment and I get slightly better speed with just the modem to the xbox v modem to router to xbox. So im curious on and if there is a modem out there and if it is would i need to configure it or just plug it in.
Edit: I have notice that my modem has lost internet several times. I used to connect at 3100 download and about 810 upload now im conected at 2715 kbps / 766 kbps. Each time it keeps going down and resting the modem dont work. Its got to be either my modem or earthlink.
that may be a problem since the guy that came to the house did something to it. He made it where i can only get internet from my room and no other jack. Im about 98% sure that its either the modem or the station where I get it from. After the person came to do the work on the Nid I was getting 99% dwnload Qos and the pause in ms was about 5ms but now its like i get about 45-80 qos and get massive spikes over 250ms. I know its nothing on my end because nothing has changed except the dsl modem going out from time to time and it was rare but now its happening more now. Anyway I need another modem so i can get rid of my router. This is from one of my friends that works for a huge gameing company and deals with this stuff all the time.

Intermittent problems are very rarely from the modem and seeing that the sync rate changes that indicates a possible line issue before the Modem itself. Most Modems just fail to turn on (or you find it powered off/dead one day) and they rarely suffer from slow degradation unlike the copper loops frequently do.
Normally a Home Run is what you want as you only want one jack for the Modem and then filter all the other jacks with a NID splitter.
I have the filter on the only phone we got plugged in. I restarted the modem and download went back up in speed but its not very good QOS like it use to be. This tells me that either the tech had changed something in the co on the server in hooked into or the modem or the route they given me Anyway back to my orginal post about getting a new modem. If I find a 4 port/wireless dsl modem will I need to configure it or not and what should I look for in getting one.
