Wi-Fi hacker gets 18 years in prison for terrorizing neighbo

Another good reason to well secure your wireless:

»news.yahoo.com/minnesota-wi-fi-h···295.html

quote:
Minnesota hacker Barry Ardolf was sentenced to an 18-year term in a federal prison this Tuesday. Ardolf had terrorized a neighboring family for two years through a carefully planned campaign involving a hijacked Wi-Fi network to harass, frame and embarrass the next-door neighbors in every facet of their lives....

...The man, a Medtronic computer technician, downloaded a Wi-Fi hacking program to tear into his neighbors WEP encryption. Ardolf created a fake Myspace page as well as several fake emails for Matt Kostolnik. The hacker then posted child porn on the Myspace page and emailed the same child porn to co-workers at Kostolnik’s law office....

How do they know it was him? DHCP logs to mac address? He admitted to it? Oh that's right he had to admit to it as that's the only way prosecutors got a day in court.

He could of only gotten 2 years for threatening the vice-president, but he didn't take the "plea bargain" and instead the Prosecutor put all the charges available against him, resulting in 18 years.

After the husband explained to his law office superiors that he had no idea what was happening, his bosses hired a law firm that examined his network and discovered that an “unknown” device had access to it. With Kostolnik’s permission, they installed a packet sniffer on his network to try and get to the bottom of the incidents.

Then, in May 2009, the Secret Service showed up at Kostolnik’s office to ask about several threatening e-mails sent from his Yahoo account, and traced to his IP address, that were addressed to Biden and other politicians. The subject line of one e-mail read: “This is a terrorist threat! Take this seriously.”

“I swear to God I’m going to kill you!,” part of the message to Biden said.

A forensics computer investigator working for Kostolnik’s law firm examined the packet logs, and found the e-mail sessions sending the threats. In the data surrounding the threatening traffic, they found traffic containing Ardolf’s name and Comcast account .

When you use someone elses WiFi(especially when a packet sniffer is on the WiFi), you should turn off all things that may send data that may identify you(like auto connecting email accounts, etc.).

The two year plea deal that Ardolf refused..

Prisoners are treated better than supposedly free North Americans.

zalternate fantastic catch I hadnt seen that before. That's a tremendous statement.

1st he was doing it to 'the neighbour' so this guy has to be backing up and storing pcap files the size of epic sizes. I dont think my computer could load up and parse such large pcap files.

Furthermore WHAT or WHERE actually has this metadata? Did he log in to his own comcast isp or something while on their wifi?

Why does it seem more like they hired a 'forensics computer investigator' to fabricate proof/lie to indict them.

This is why no court will ever want me to be a juror.

What an idiot, bet he now wishes that he'd built himself a designated attack computer.

Edit: Of course, I'm not suggesting ways to get away with this. This guy's a sick individual and I'm glad he foolishly used his personal PC to penetrate a network because, it exposed him!

Not necessary. Just use a Linux LiveCD every time you wanna hack someone's wifi, then go back to your regularly scheduled OS when you're done.

Using a Linux Live-CD keeps data from writing to the HDD of the PC, but it does not remove the hardware MAC address for wireless from being used in the packets, so a router log still shows the hardware that accessed the router.

What about using the macchanger command to change the MAC address?
