And what do you think are the reasons that all email suppliers are reading mail?

I'm sure that some is just idle curiosity. But that happens everywhere and does not concern me.

Some may be done following official (or not so official) requests. That concerns me but I don't think that there is much to be done about it aside from legislation that restricts the power of the Patriot act or related measures.

Some may be for "marketing" purposes, which to me is concerning. The concept is just a little too broad for comfort. What EXACTLY does that mean? Does that mean that they will use it to target advertising? Does that mean that they may sell your address and the content of your mail to those who may try to scam you? Does that mean that, for example, the RIAA can buy all this data and see if someone incriminates themselves? Since they'd be obtaining the emails legally, one could imagine that they could use it a lot more effectively than having to subpoena ISP records.

Do you think the phone company listens in on all phone calls? For what purpose?
