Reminds me of driving through Homestead after Andrew and to a lesser extent what was around here after Wilma.

This brought a tear to my eye as it hit close to home.
I lived in Springfield, MO about 70 miles away from Joplin.

But maybe why so tall.... so trees wouldn't fall on them. And otherwise low wind profile. (but not dense enough community to have a lot of big heavy wide profile transformers on top of them or they were off to the side of the main line on local poles)

Those are not really not all that tall, they appear to be standard class 4 or 5 by 35 footers.

Also there are a few of them with single phase transformers in place.

But in the before they were well above most of the surrounding trees...so no wire tangling, and again with no big top heavy transformer racks on them either. Yes maybe a small single phase here and there but wires well above tree line.

I dont think youre quite grasping how much wind load there is on a single utility pole, add I. The lines and youre looking at even more... Pole lines get blown over all the time.

This is straight line wind damage at what was recorded at 90 mph. It is worth noting the concrete poles feeding this lateral did not fail.

And after Hurricane Georges in 1998, Key Energy invested big time in replacing important wooden poles with steel/concrete ones.

Its made a big difference since. That was near two weeks without power. Now after a hurricane rare its 48 hours. In fact in Wilma it was delayed only so the island raind and people weren't accidentally electrocuted becase they weren't smart enough to through their main breaker.

Seeing some of the aerial photos of these areas hit by the bad tornado outbreaks. the towns look like they simply got nuked.
