| Turn Back The Clock 150 Years! Next weekend, if you pack up a picnic lunch and head out to the Bull Run battlefield, you'll be just like an 1861 D.C. metropolitan area civilian. So, sitting up on a hillside and munching your fried chicken while watching the battle actually makes you an active participant in the reenactment!
Think of that!
Of course, if you truly want to be realistic, about halfway through your meal you'll need to abandon lunch and everything else you brought with you, soil yourself, and start running like hell away from that place just as fast as you can. |

Understand this is a "once-in-a-lifetime" event, but I think I'll stay on my side of town away from the crowds. Heck, the reenactment isn't even going to be on the battlefield itself.

At least the opening ceremony and the other NPS events are free:

I'm pretty sure it was also hot as hell around July 21st 1961-- when I was at the 100th anniversary reenactment. Just a boy at the time, but I was infatuated with all things army and/or U.S. Civil War related.
I remember it pretty well. There were people in attendance who had come as Civil War-era civilians, dressed in costumes of the day and riding buggies and wagons, with their picnic lunches spread out.
The cannon were booming, and the musketry was loud and smoky. What I remember best though, is how the "dead guys" didn't stay dead very long. Really, who can blame them? Hotter than hell, and they're all wearing the full woolen uniforms of the day. If they stayed out in that sun like that for too long, they wouldn't need to 'pretend' they were dead anymore.
I also remember it that the reenactment then was on the battlefield itself, and don't remember if there was a monetary fee. Of course, a kid isn't concerned with such things as whether or not you have to pay.
So maybe some things change. But apparently one thing doesn't: If you're going to be outside around Washington, D.C. come late July of 1861, 1961, or 2011-- expect the weather to be roasting. |

| From the reenactor's FAQ
quote: 12. I understand that as a part of the Authenticity Standards no one over 32 years of age or over 165 pounds will be permitted to participate. Is that true? Great idea from an authenticity perspective, but no, there is no such limitation. We would ask, however, that those that meet or exceed these standards think about the size of the event and the summer heat in Virginia in July. Your safety is imperative and we ask that you not put yourself in danger or otherwise put yourself in a position of diminishing the opportunity of others to enjoy the reenactment. Heat was a very real factor at the battle in 1861 and for the 125th, 135th, and 145th battles of First Manassas/Bull Run.
