| Troubles calling outside home area code Recently I have started experiencing problems calling any phone numbers outside my local area code. I can dial a local 7-digit phone number with no trouble, and I can call voice mail (via *123), and I can receive calls with no issues. But if I try to dial a 1+area code+number I get nothing but dead air.
Sometimes, but not always, I can resolve the issue by rebooting both the Vonage router and my main internet router, but it is a temporary fix. The issue always comes back - sometimes within a couple days and sometimes within hours.
I have contacted Vonage support and they reportedly started monitoring my device so they can work on a solution. I'm not sure what will come out of that, but time will tell I guess.
Has anyone else ever experienced this? It seems to me, since I can dial numbers locally, that it must be a Vonage routing problem.
For the record, I'm using Vonage with my 4G wireless internet which is against their recommendations, but it has worked great up until now. |

 | What you are describing is pretty unusual. My first reaction would be a DTMF issue where a digit infrequently dialed on local calls (say, a 1) isn't being recognized. But a 10 digit dialing should work. And since *123 works, that is pretty much eliminated.
Second thought is an issue with a low MTU where packets are getting fragmented. The message to initiate an outgoing call might be small enough when you dial only 7 digits but 10 or 11 goes over the edge.
Since you know 7 digit number work, can you try dialing 8 digits and 9 digits? The 8 and 9 digit number will of course be invalid and you should get a recorded message saying such if the message to initiate the call makes it from your TA to Vonage.
As far as how Vonage routes calls, it doesn't matter if you dial a domestic number with 7 digits, 10 digits, or 11 digits: the number is converted to 11 digits and routed the same. There is no concept of a "local" or "long distance" call. |

| Thanks for the advice. I think I have fixed the problem, at least for the time being. Because I'm using 4G internet, my Vonage device is behind my router instead of in front of it as Vonage advises. On a hunch, I put the Vonage device in my router's DMZ so that it would be out from behind the firewall, and so far everything is working normally. It still doesn't make any sense as to why 7-digit numbers worked and 11-digit numbers didn't, but I guess it doesn't have to make sense as long as it works.
For the record, I'm running Sprint 4G wireless into a Cradlepoint MBR-1000 router. Vonage works exceptionally well for me when I'm not having problems like the one I just described. I'm also real close to the tower and have a booming wireless signal at my location with relatively low ping times (around 60 ms which is very good for wireless). |

It is not a DTMF issue or a Vonage routing issue.
The most common "Dialing Plan" is:
(*xx|[3469]11|0|00|[2-9]xxxxxx|1xxx[2-9]xxxxxxS0|xxxxxxxxxxxx.)
A search of the BBR Forums will likely yield additions and modifications which allow for a variety of "specialized" calling options. |

Amazingly enough, I haven't had any issues at all since putting the Vonage device in my router's DMZ. I know this totally defies logic - if it were a firewall issue then it should interfere with 7-digit calls just as much as 10- or 11-digit calls. But whatever the case may be, it's working like a champ now. |
