Back of Patch
My office network that it's been build.

We're moving location, and construction is on his way.

That a small part of one of our system room

1st pic: Ups for that room, and some pc in the office. A generator is backing that.

2nd: the rack on the left have phones lines, and for now, a Cisco 3900 router. On the right, the patch panel for 75% of the office (550 ports)

3rd: 2 fiber coming in... one MPLS link and the other a regular internet connection

4rd: back of the patch.. on the top left, the green cable.. 10gb ethernet, to link with the other switch room

More yet to come

We have them as a backup link. But we never had any issue with them.

Nice.

What is that 'black box' behind the UPS?

Its the breaker panel (200Amps) for the equipment connected on the UPS.

Oddly enough, it doesn't look like a breaker panel. Can you get a better photo of it?

The reason I ask is that the UPS is placed directly in front of the panel. I would bet that Canada's electric code requires 36" of working clearance in front of electrical panels, just like the NEC does. You should ask your electrician. (208V, grounded metal object in front.)

Your network equipment and low-voltage wiring job looks fantastic. I can't say the same about the electrical installation, unfortunately. There are a number of basic code violations.

Am I correct if I were to guess that the breaker panel is a special one that provides the ability to externally bypass the UPS?

That's what I was thinking - maintenance bypass panel, which normally have breakers. Many have ability to synchronize the UPS output with the bypass, so that they can be transferred to bypass and back, with a closed-cycle transition and not interrupt power. Still needs to have the minimum working clearance. If I had to guess, the photo shows the function of the conduits.

I think I found it (or at least, a similar looking panel):

That panel is quite big, it's actually 37" wide. Hard to tell for sure from the photo, but I'd say there's probably 36" or more of space behind the UPS if you estimate the proportions.

I would bet there is not; just by looking at the length of conduit after the bend. True, there is some flex that you can't see; but after designing enough of these jobs, and seeing many similar computer rooms; I would say no until I see a photo with the measuring tape. Here are pictures of two similar APC UPS installations - same problem, not meeting working clearance requirements.

Thanks for the link, though. I can say, thank god the OP got a maintenance bypass panel. There is nothing worse than having a UPS whose power to the load must be cut to perform normal maintenance on the UPS system.

Indeed. I've actually had a situation a few months ago where a UPS at one of our sites kicked the bucket. Power had to be shut down several times during the process of replacing the UPS, which meant lots of after-hours work (which for us is after 22:00) and overtime.

All in all it was a huge PITA.

But, we did have a MBP installed along with the new UPS, so that should never again be an issue.

I'm actually surprised we managed to keep proper clearances to all the panels, considering the size of the room, which I'd say is no bigger than 10'x10', and has the UPS, 4 panels, and a 20kVA transformer.
