Also, you posted only pictures with no text. What do you use all this for? Some specs? |
|
 | Most of the posts on this forum are pretty lame like this one. |

| Pfft. Your set up looks like my wife's office. What are you showing that's so special besides nothing? That's my point. Some of the people here have got some great things to show as far as servers go but few match up to desktopped.com (and even they have a lot of lame showings). |

DaMaGeINCThe Lan ManPremium join:2002-06-08 Greenville, SC kudos:2 | Thanks for posting the pictures! Everyone has to start somewhere. I remember my 1st setup, looked terrible lol. Over the years ive been able to get it all rack mounted and cables ran in the walls to a central closet with a patch panel. Check my profile for a video of it. The rack cost me $90 plus shipping, so not to bad. -- Hating ignorance since 1984. |

You don't need to spend thousand of dollars to fix up wiring and putting together a DIY rack. Even a simple plywood used as a patch panel will work.
When I put in my Leviton structured media panel, I had AT&T DSL 3MBps to live with. I now upgraded to CC Biz internet and still have the same panel.
Besides, I wasn't the one saying your setup was lame...it was howardfine... |

| reply to hyelton When I want to look at other peoples setups I usually hope they have a nice home rack or two of servers, some of the setups I've seen on here downright suck. I remember seeing a website called server pron or something like that, had awesome home rack setups. I believe Oxygen who is a member here had a pretty nice home setup if I remember correctly. |

You could have at least said what it does. I'm not big on looks, but interested in its function. -- What smells like blue? |

jbcg join:2001-09-15 Milwaukee, WI | reply to hyelton Look, it doesn't take 1,000s of $$$ to make a neat server stack. Vacuum that floor, throw away or move those cardboard boxes (fire hazard!) and, what is that, a bike tire? Get those drives bolted into the server cases properly. For a just a few bucks (check eBay) you can replace those terminally kinked ethernet cables (free in the Netgear box, right?) with some that actually have some EMI resistance. And my personal preference would be for a server login screen that looks more professional--no photo wallpaper, etc.
Then, when you make your post just give a quick description of your setup. What does it do? (Just for your personal training? That's fine--that's called a "lab.") What are the specs on the boxes (clock speeds, amt of memory, OS version, HD space)? What kind of WAN connectivity do you have (you talked about this in your response)? Do you support any users? Like family members or . . . ?
Thanks for sharing--I wouldn't have criticized you out of hand, but it just needs to be noted that you don't need big bucks to run a tight ship.
Congrats on what you've accomplished so far. Now take it to the next level!

EdrickI aspire to tell the story of a lifetimePremium join:2004-09-11 Woburn, MA | reply to hyelton Well unlike everyone else who wants to whine and moan (Bad week guys?). When I saw the pictures I had a little smile remembering my first server closet setup.
There's a reason this is the home server setup forum and not the high end mega bucks one. Sure it doesn't take thousands to make a nice setup almost all my gear is donated high end equipment. But not everyone has the time or is looking to do that. Some people just toss it together and it serves their purpose.

 | reply to hyelton Classic IBM clicky Model M keyboard, good for typing or battling in hand to hand combat. What's the date code? (if the sticker is still intact it should be printed on the underside) I think the earliest one I have is circa 1996, still works. |

 | If you have an accredited college e-mail you can get 2003 and 2008 R2 for free from Microsoft, for personal use only obviously.
