@dialog.net.pl

is wpa2 compatible with my laptop?

i have an older laptop with 802.11g only, and a router with wpa2 encryption.

So far i have only managed to connect to my router using wpa.

Is this because my laptop is unable to deal with wpa2 [due to it's age]?

Thank you

There are two possible issues.

Firstly, can your laptop handle AES encryption, or is it limited to TKIP? That's probably a function of the wifi adaptor. If you can use WPA with AES encryption, then you should be able to handle AES.

If you can't handle AES, then don't bother with WPA2, since it requires AES (except that there is a TKIP fall back).

Secondly, if your laptop can handle AES, then it should be able to handle WPA2 if the software is recent enough. As I recall, Windows included WPA2 support in service pack 3. If you are running XP-SP3 and can handle AES, you should be able to handle WPA2. If you are running XP, then try upgrading to SP3. If you are running something older than XP, then it is probably not worth trying. With Win7 or Vista, support for WPA2 should be there.
