Re: [Rant] Why is it so frackin' hard to find a kegerator

said by snipper_cr:

Dennis, what are you looking to make your Kegerator do? House a standard commercial keg?

yeah that's my goal, I can always adapt to cornies but I want it to be able to take a full 1/2 barrel standard keg if I wanted it to.

I just picked up a small refrigerator off craigslist for $25 (needs some cleaning but works). A complete kit with a stainless steel perlick upgrade is about $189 from keg connection. So I'm looking at about $212 all said and done....just as soon as I can get a run on some kegs of good beer.

Figured even if I can't find any that I can resell the fridge cleaned up for more than i paid for it and call it even.

I'm not familiar with these things, how long does the beer stay drinkable once the keg is tapped? Does it gradually go bad, or does it sort of go belly-up at some point?

From experience, it'll stay fresh for 3 weeks.

You can have it in for 4 weeks, but you tell it's going bad.

Anytime after, it's just kind of gets gross.

I found this site.

Never heard of them but it looks like they have a place in Rockford. They seem to have decent prices as well. »www.micromatic.com/draft-keg-bee···-VT.html

yeah found them, the reason I was going with kegconnection was because they don't charge tax and have flat rate shipping going on. The same order was $20 cheaper, plus I could upgrade the kit to a stainless steel perlick.

Yes. At least I'm not sitting here with a keg I can't even tap though. That must be hell.

edit: Is there something wrong with the site today or is it just this slow? Never seen it this slow if that's it.

Rockford industrial welding...$15.85 for a 5#. Like I said I really wanted to fill it but every place was more expensive, farther away and to time consuming.

The tanks are beat up but I had to just accept the fact that nobody is gonna see it. Really loving the dual gauge CO2 regulator too.

oh and also...had the hardest time getting the Perlick faucet to connect to the shank. Seriously inhuman strength was requrired and if you ask me it means they weren't machined properly (the shank or the faucet or both).

Rockford isn't all that close to you either.

Could you mount those regulators remotely? Or would that require it to be hard piped. Would be nice to have then on the outside where you can keep an eye on them. Not a big deal I suppose.

Yeah, it's named rockford but they have a branch in crystal lake (which is where I went) very close.

Nice article Dennis! After reading this thread, nothing could induce me to get involved with one of these things. Too much hassle and expense. And it seems like you would need to go through an awful lot of beer before it came close to justifying its cost and trouble? Correct me if I'm wrong. I dunno, maybe I'm missing something here.

You know...I forgot to include a break down of costs cause i was in a hurry. My bad.

Honestly for me it's worth the cost. But me and the wife love beer so we drink a lot. Which explains the three kids.

How much money do you figure this thing saves you on a monthly basis?

I'll chime in here. The cost to build a kegerator will probably be recouped over a years time, depending on consumption of course. It also depends on what kind of beer you're drinking. The savings is totally minimal. The price margin on beer is very small. On a 1/2 keg, I'd throw a guess at a savings of roughly $10-$15 /mos. This is all assuming that you drink the entire keg in the time frame, because keg beer does go bad. That's a lot of beer.

It's also not about the savings. Beer is supposed to be brewed and stored in Kegs and consumed in glasses. It's the same argument people say that wine tastes better when served from a decanter. It's all about aeration and the development of flavor during that process.
