Got rear-ended on the way into work today.

Came to a stop at a light, with about 15 cars in front of me.

Driver behind me swerved and nailed the right of my rear bumper.

I'm in my new Kia. Other driver was in a Mercedes SLK230.

Her bumper was about to fall off. I have a piece of her headlamp glass lodged in my bumper.

We both have the same insurance company. Mercury. Where I just so happen to work...lol

Wonder how this is going to pan out.

The Mercedes owner will hire her excellent lawyer who will convince the jury that your stopped car was in the wrong.
She will collect $17m in damages.

The other driver admitted fault.

My $1000 deductible is being waived, and a rental car will be provided if necessary at no cost to me.

You should have claimed back and neck injury. And especially, went for the ride in an ambulance.

You missed out on a sweet payday...

I wasn't raised that way. The thought did cross my mind, however.

Car is already in the shop. Estimate is 5 to 7 days for repair.

Rental car company had to drop me off back at work though because they didn't have anything to give me at that moment. They're going to pick me up around 4pm and drive me back to the rental place to pick up my rental. Full size vehicle, fully paid for including mileage.

Does it look to anyone else in that first pic like my rear axle might be an issue? The tire looks a little crooked - but it doesn't look that way in the 2nd pic.

Hoping it's just an optical illusion due to the shape of the car and the angle of the pic.

[edit]Finally got picked up by Enterprise. The only car they had was a 2010 Honda Accord. As I'm driving it home, the little wrench light comes on...(and theres a thingy on the dash that says 10% oil life).

Gonna harass them about it tomorrow to get me something different...and it IS costing me - Merc won't pay for the Rental car insurance, so it's $11.99/day out of my pocket...

My son's first job was working at an Enterprise office - When the "Check Engine" lights would come on, standard procedure was to disconnect the battery to reset it. The next customer would then have it come on after they drove away from the office. Sounds like that's still the way things are done.

Just got off the phone with them. They said they didn't have anything available at the moment, but when they did (presumably later today), they'd give me a call, and drive down to swap it out...

Shop also called. Said if they replace my bumper with a mildly used one it's going to cost $1200. They ordered it and if it's in good condition they'll use it, otherwise they'll order a new one.

What's the bill if they use a new one?

I dunno. But apparently, it's mercury's "policy" to replace using used parts first if they are available. Sucks...

Well it is a used car, after all. a 2010 with 13k miles is still "used" even though it's in (was in) excellent condition.

And since I'm using their recommended shop I get a lifetime warranty on the repair...

$1200 for a new bumper? That seems high, doesn't it? I got rear-ended in my Tacoma several years ago and I believe it only cost about $500 for a NEW OEM bumper.

I would imagine the paint and color matching costs more than the bumper itself...

He did mention something about a spring too.
