Knology - Midland, GA (outside Columbus)

For years our only options have been Mediacom & Bellsouth DSL. I'm currently on Bellsouth's highest plan for $48 a month, with speeds of 6 Mb/s down and 1/2 Mb/s up.

Pretty miserable speeds for "top tier", but they are at least consistent...I truly do get those speeds most of the time. So I'm naturally intrigued when Knology finally knocks on my door saying that they've finally rolled out cable to my area. I have no need for phone or TV, so I'm only interested in internet. Here's their offer:

$29.99 + $4 modem + taxes for 12 months - 15 Mb/s down, 2 Mb/s up. After 12 months, price jumps $10.

Not sure what kind of activation/installation up front costs there are, I need to call back and check, but I had a few questions ya'll might be able to answer.

How do you think those 15/2 cable "hare" speeds compare to my 6/.5 DSL "tortoise" speeds. Are they mythical and I'm more likely to be only slightly better than DSL? Or is this new DOCSIS 3.0 rollout i've heard about making them much more consistently awesome?

Related to the above question, I know this isn't the highest cable speed tier, but would I still benefit from buying an SB6120 to take full advantage of the 15/2 and save $4 a month to boot?

my speeds run 20/2 on basic internet, and sometimes it reaches 30 mb down...

internet is good, phone ok, and cable is better than Mediacon. if you have had to wait like i did for a tech to come out, switch!

when it takes mediacom 2 weeks to come out and fix something, you know they blow.

Their standard speed package is 12/2, then their Edge package is 25/5. Knology has done an EXCELLENT job at prepping their network for true DOCSIS 3.0 speeds. Speeds are consistent, 24 hours daily. As you can see here in the forum, it's VERY quiet, no complaints since 3.0 rolled out. Go to the Mediacom forum, totally different story.

Once you experience the 2Mbps upload, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it. Oh yeah, the 12 meg download is nice, too! Switch, you won't regret it!

Thanks guys, I'm sold! So would you recommend buying my own modem?

We are still awaiting DOCSIS 3 here in Montgomery, but I've always bought my own modems. You can buy the modem from Amazon for ~ $90 and it is yours, or you can pay Knology four bucks a month forever (or until they jack up the price).

Enjoy those blazing speeds, I hope to see them soon here.

ya dude. dsl is dead. even the fastest dsl offerings (fiber to the node based) usually max out around 18M, and the signal is interlaced which makes your latency much larger than it would be otherwise.

Here in Augusta my speeds tend to dip during the peek times of the day. I always get more than 12M or so.

My 24/4 service:

I bought my modem on ebay for $12 shipped a few years ago. Its just docsis 2.0 but its fast enough for the current speed offerings.

The doc2 modem will work, but if you are seeing a large dip during peak hours you might want to think about a doc 3 modem as it uses channel bonding which helps with load balancing.

Just got Knology Edge internet and TV installed here in Midland. Speed tested 31+mbps down and 6+mbps up. Suffered with very poor service from Mediacom for 2 years. They were the only choice other than Satellite and DSL. Had 12 mbps service with them that would drop to 1-2mbps at peak times in the evening. I complained for 2 years but got nothing but the run around. They had oversold the capacity of their equipment would not address the problem. As for TV service, Mediacom would pixelate really bad on the HD channels in the afternoon during the 6pm news. They did give me a promotional rate for a year which is the only thing that kept me from going with Satellite and DSL.

Knology just became available so I switched. So far, the internet is speed is rocking. They don't have as many HD TV channels as Mediacom so that was one thing I had to give up. But, there are always other options for TV via the internet. I have enough speed to stream multiple devices simultaneously.

please, i have had BT open and dling, playing cod4, and streaming music from Thewolf.ca, and had Teamspeak, xfire, and about 10 tabs in firefox open... not a bit of lag on the internet... with basic...

i have topped out at 2 MBPS. which is around 22 mbps. now i am just waiting for docsis 4.0 in about 2-3 years.. lol...

Update to my original post. Speeds during peak time (7-10pm) drop to around 7-8 mbps consistently in my neighborhood. They go back up to 15-17 after 10pm. Upload consistently tests 5-6 mbps any time of the day. Don't know if the slowdown will be more as more people in my neighborhood switch. For now I am happy. I don't know if the provided cable modem is DOCSIS 3.0. The cable guy said it was but then again he hooked up my TV wrong to the cable box and I had to redo it. Waiting for them to come an bury the line and keeping my fingers crossed that they don't cut one of my lawn sprinkler lines.

well, they don't put the line that deep. they just left up the grass and roots, put the cable in there and pack it back down. if they break a line, it's on them and their bury team.

I am new to the Columbus area and this will be my first experience with Knology (It is the only isp for my apartment complex in North Columbus). When I called Knology about starting internet service only, I was quoted $67.95 + $4 modem + taxes for 15/2Mb speed. I was told this was the "Basic" service and the only option without a bundle. This seems outlandish to me. I was originally looking for 6 or 12 Mb down and hoping to pay around $50/month max. If another potential customer is offered $29.99 in the same month for the same service, then what is the reason for the extreme price hike? I do not think 67.95 is a fair price, but perhaps I am unaware of the pricing for the area.

Does anyone know their current rates? They do not post them online (making it even easier to change rates at every whim) She did offer a bundle of cable, internet and phone service for $79+ modem + taxes, for one year. I never use a land line phone and rarely use cable TV.

yea, that sounds bs... i would want the name of that rep.

Kim00805

@myvzw.com

Thanks. I talked to my leasing office who recommended their contact person at Knology. I was able to get the $29.99 rate for a year. I will be filing a complaint about the original sales rep. I did get their name, but I won't mention it here. So new customers be cautious about the price quotes over the phone. I was able to pick up a printed brochure with current prices listed.

Now just to decide if I want to rent or purchase a Docsis 3.0 modem!

Loving the service and speeds now, but I can't help but be curious about cost-benefit potential of Edge Plus.

My understanding is that it would basically double my current 12-15 down /2 up....but what's the cost difference?

IIRC, it's an additional $15 or so.

There's nothing wrong with having a D2 modem all the way to 30mbps down. Each downstream channel is capable of 42mbps, which a D2 modem should handle the majority of just fine.

Knology in GA or Anywhere...

A question if you all have a minute...

And you know how we used to "rate" upload and download speeds ?

What does or do cable modems equate to as far as Mbits (millions of bits per second) and the usually more traditional methods of rating cable modems in K bytes per second.

For example, a cable modem uplink speed capped at "256K" as we used to say = how many Mbits ?

and then, 784K uplink speed would thus = how many Mbits ?

This isn't a test, but more-so to be sure I am not messing my own head up with cable modem speeds...we are currently on ARRIS DOCIS 2 modem here in Knoxville.

1Mbps=1024Kbps so 256k=appr. .256mbps
