Re: [Embarq] post your centurylink speedtest results!

I'd love to have speeds like msj's. But I think its only a dream for us, in this part of the Hoosier State.

And now to the East Cost: 6:07PM CDT:

To The South: 6:08PM CDT:

And last but not least, to the North: 6:10PM CDT:

I am guessing CenturyLink for my area of the country is based out of Pennsilvanya(did I spell that right?). Cause it shows me in PN, when I am in Indiana.

I'd love to give a speedtest result, but DSL is down and out like a light.

I didn't do one on speedtest.net, because I never get over ~7Mb upload. I have seen it as high as 18 in real world use.

Shaperprobe results.

Upstream: No shaper detected.
Median received rate: 18032 Kbps.

Downstream: No shaper detected.
Median received rate: 36474 Kbps.

Re: [Embarq] post your centurylink speedtest results!

The CL service is so slow this AM in Flagstaff that speedtest.net will not complete. On the last try the best ping was to Parker, AZ; not a goodsign... 0.04Mbps down on a 3Mbps line. Yes! 0.04Mbps download speed!!! Unmeasurable upload speed on a 866Mbps up line. As bad as dial-up!!

I may not even be able to post this note. I'm getting used to saving a copy of everything I post before hitting "post" because so much gets lost nowadays.

Just switched to Centurylink. First speed test results:

Haven't canceled our cable internet with time warner partnered with earthlink. Results connected directly to the modem:

We're saving $35 but is it worth it?

I have 12Mbps (12122/889) so this result is about right.

[att=1]

Kinda.

12 Mbps should equal 12 Mbps.

It is the same as being sold a box of 12 donuts, and being ok with 11 in the box.... due to losses. They should not be able to sell 12 Mbps if they can not provide it.

No it shouldn't. They provide a raw line speed (bps). Take off the TCP/IP overhead etc and you get less.

"Due to overhead and signaling it is not possible to download end-user data at actual advertised speeds. Depending on the type of service and whether you are served from a remote DSLAM or not you will have a minimum of roughly 12.5% overhead."

It's the same thing with hard drive sizes. First off they're always advertised in raw decimal MB/GB etc not computer MB/GB (i.e. a power of 2). Then when you format the drive you lose some due to overhead.

In my case the modem syncs at 12,122 so I should get around

12122 x (1 - 0.125) = 10,607

which I am.

That's great and I appreciate the clarification. So those of us that are only getting 10 to 20% of what was advertised are screwed? Mainly because of distance from the source?

It' called Marketing or as I call it "creative lying".

As I explained your line speed is what they claim (what your modem
syncs at). It has nothing to do with "distance from the source".

PS: I'm not trying to excuse CenturyLink for abnormally slow speeds as many in this thread are experiencing. If you're getting less than about 12.5% of your rating there's a problem. That said you can't judge that from one speed test site.

PPS: I used to have the 7Mbps package and could not get more than 1.5Mbps for many months. Presumably CenturyLink fixed the issue in my area.

We signed up for their 10mbps package. Of course it says up to 10 but tests are showing anywhere from 0.74 to 1.4 mbps. I'll probably give them a call Tuesday and discuss the issue.
