| Level3 Re-gen site [Youtube, discovered by accident] »www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsGaIRnMovQ
Looking @ Level3's network map it follows I-40 and is the southern route along I-40 between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
I guess if you've ever accessed internet content (99.9% of us have I guess since they are Tier-1) between the tracert on the layer3 level between Denver and Los Angeles your internet 'bits' have been re-generated on that site in-between Las Vegas and Los Angeles (Vegas and LA both have full Level(3) gateway data-centers). |

 | reply to willzzz I've come across regen sites like this in some of the most out the way places. There is a Level 3 site that runs between Chattanooga and Nashville that's probably 50-60 miles from the nearest interstate in the middle of no where. T |

 | reply to willzzz Must have been fun building that place, remote location, hot during the day, freeze nuts off at night.
But where is the power coming from, the video does not show any power lines, wonder if its buried? |

The most likely function of that site is amplification, done usually every 80-100 km, give or take (more or less depending on topology and other factors). Regeneration may be done every couple of thousand kilometres, and chances are that within that distance youre going to hit a terminal/node site anyway.
But without knowing what equipment is inside that building even the above is a guess.
Background: Each time you amplify a signal, noise is introduced. Regeneration sites are planned at points where the noise margin is expected to start becoming too small to guarantee your signals wont suffer any side effects. So at a regen site the signal is re-created afresh (among other things depending on the system in use) and amplified along the path until this needs to happen again.
Just FYI. |
