"Up to 44 times the speed of 28.8"

They can and do charge them prices, when the customer has no other option. That is what they built there business model on. They are having trouble in urban areas, too much competition.

this seems like a rip off to me since Comcast is in the area offering up to 50Mbps service.

So go to Comcast if you feel it's a better deal.

You should see the prices for Sisqtel DSL in the region of Siskiyou County, California:

Pricing:

           Downstream Upstream Price
Economy Up to 384 Kbps Up to 256 Kbps $24.95/Month
Basic Up to 3.0 Mbps Up to 1.0 Mbps $49.95/Month
Enhanced Up to 6.0 Mbps Up to 1.0 Mbps $69.95/Month

Probably something to do with being a rural service area.
