Planning on downloading a few Terabytes this month on Qwest

Hey all,
I created this thread so that I can report on what happens when I download+upload a total of about 3TB of data. You see, I just recently bought a 2TB hard drive for cheap online and I have this big list of tv series and movies that I want to download, including all the episodes of "The Computer Chronicles"

I signed up for the Qwest/Centurylink 12Mb/1Mb(up) service and it will be installed tomorrow probably. Then, I'll start downloading.

I specifically asked the Qwest guy on the phone and I mentioned the 250GB/month suggested limited that Comcast has and asked if there was any limit on Qwest. He said no.

Should be interesting. Thoughts?

How about not downloading all 3TB this month? On the other hand, do you not need that 12/1 connection for very long? Also, you do know that copyright infringement is illegal right?

Regardless, let us know how it goes/what you decide.

Last week I happened to find this Excessive Use Policy page:
»qwest.centurylink.com/internethelp/eup.html

A funny quote from the pdf: "What is considered 'normal' usage on the Internet? Most customers who use broadband service at their homes use approximately 1-3 Gigabytes per month."

"Examples of 'excessive' or 'high volume' use are as follows:
- 300,000-500,000 photo downloads in one month
- 40,000 to 80,000 typically sized MP3 music downloads in one month
- 15+ million unique e-mails each month
- Online TV video streaming of 1,000-3,000 30-minute shows each month
- 2-5 million Web page visits (approximately one every second, 24 hours per day)"

I think they're trying to avoid saying 250GB/month.

I am trying to get everything downloaded within 1 month's time, as I only want to have the service long enough to download what I want, so i don't really care if they disconnect me for downloading too much.
I use Clearwire for internet right now and will be keeping them.

The technician is driving over to my house as I type to install the Centurylink service.. will let you know if the truck says Qwest or the other.

It’s people like you that keep my Internet service pricing high—and force ISPs to implement caps and all sorts of annoying packet throttling.

Please be certain to let us know if you are issued any notices or subpoenas from the U.S. Copyright Group, MPAA or similar shortly after you willfully abuse Qwest’s network and service.

Qwest has a soft cap a very soft cap. I've eclipsed the 700GB for a few months in a row with no issues. The only way they will say anything is if your bandwidth usage causes bandwidth issue on your node.

Why don't you just download what you want on clearwire.

I feel that if im paying for service i should get to use it to its fullest. Meaning the speed i paid for used 24/7. Else im getting ripped off. You yelling at this guy wanting to use what he paid for..... Wow.
Anyways, i feel less than 10TB/month should be more than acceptable. Otherwise upgrade your network or stop advertising speed you "can't" use.

Using or abusing it for a month or so to get around his normal ISPs caps? That is abuse.

I recently got a 40mbps line. Im looking at using 2-7TB/month (max i could hit in a month would be upper 20TBs) . When i asked the rep when i signed up i said I'd be using that kind of bandwidth and was told that was fine.
I just think that using what you've paid for is not abuse.

Here we go again. You aren't paying for your full speed 24/7. I suspect you know that (heck pretty much everyone here knows that at this point) and you're just trolling. If you truly want 12m down 24/7, then buy yourself 8 T1's and bond them. Otherwise you absolutely are NOT getting ripped off.

Unless a business line either you or the rep was hard or hearing or just over selling and had no clue.
Plus what is the theory on a 40 line down in a month. The max without real world????
You aint getting that sorry even if and I did not do the math it can really be done.

Yeah I agree with the trolling on this one. You didn't read the fine print that said "up to xx/xx" speeds. As for using 10TB/month, not really possible with residential lines even running 24/7. Also your not guaranteed any amount of bandwidth to use so when you start causing issues with others bandwidths around you, you will get capped immediately.

unless the policy has changed due to the CL merger, youll more then likely get disconnected and have to reconnect and go thru a process of agreeing to the TOS to get your service back. I know a person who grabbed a lot of things(800 gigs a month) from usenet for a couple of months and thats what they received. I believe their softcap is right around 200 gigs a month.

250. And they only enforce it if you're causing issues with other users.

To rephrase that, what you are telling me, and other light users is, if we aren't going to use our speed 24/7 why don't we just go back to dial-up? I think there is some kind of misunderstanding. You don't have a dedicated pipe to the Internet, you have a shared pipe. So share it, already.

Just Did the math on this. 12.35 TB is the max you could get in a 30 day month.

@Bink, yes I'll be sure to post if I get a phone call, email or I get any other sort of notice in regards to internet usage or the content that I am downloading/uploading.

So far, I have downloaded +uploaded a total of about 700GB and it has been just a bit over 1 week with the new internet connection.

I have heard of Qwest blocking/rerouting port 80 to a TOS page and the user would have to agree to the terms before being able to surf again? When this is happening, is only port 80 rerouted? Bittorrent unaffected?

Anyway, so far no problems. Very happy with the service so far.

I used to download 200 GB to 1+ Terabyte a month about 7 years ago on a DSL connection before ISP's started the whole bandwidth is a fossil fuel deal.

Its funny, When I lived in South Korea I had much faster connections yet nobody I talked to even heard of the concept of a "data hog"

Isn't that a real mind F**k? Technology in the US goes backwards.
