Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

OFFICIAL VALVE NEWS UPDATE:

»store.steampowered.com/news/6059/

Next Gen Console, PC, and Mac Release Targeted for Early 2012

Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO).

Targeted for release via Playstation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and Steam (for PC and Mac) in early 2012, CS: GO will expand upon the team-based action gameplay that it pioneered when it was launched exactly 12 years ago (CS beta 1, August 1999).

CS: GO features new maps, characters, and weapons and delivers updated versions of the classic CS content (de_dust, etc.). In addition, CS: GO will introduce new gameplay modes, matchmaking, leader boards, and more.

"Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely MOD became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999," said Doug Lombardi at Valve. "For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS' award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac."

CS: GO is being developed by Valve in cooperation with Seattle-based Hidden Path Entertainment. The title is targeted for release in early 2012 and will be playable at this year's PAX Prime and Eurogamer Expo 2011.

--------------------

According to ESEAnews and Reddit.com, the much talked about rumors that a new version of Counter-Strike was in the works have officially come to light: the rumors are true, and the new game is going to be called Counter-strike: Global Offensive. The game's development has been confirmed by one of the masterminds of the original Counter-Strike on the SteamPowered.com forums. This comes shortly after rumors that Counter-Strike 2 had begun development as reputable members of the Counter-Strike community had been invited to Valve's offices in Seattle, Washington to test a new game.

ESEA News today further cemented the truth behind the rumors, stating that Craig "Torbull" Levine, the owner of ESEA, had been one of the invitees to help develop the game. Furthermore, a mysterous Reddit thread has been posted, in which the author claims to be play-testing the game. He claims that Valve wish to fix mistakes made in previous versions of the game, although their main target audience aren't only the former competitive communities of 1.6 or Source. Instead, they would rather attract a new community that combines both Counter-Strike 1.6 and CS: Source communities, competitive and casual gamers a like. Valve have brought over several Europeans and American play-testers to help move development along.

"Global Offensive" will feature matchmaking and two major game modes: one being competitive and the other more suited towards casual players. The competitive game mode will focus more on 5v5 bomb defusal - the cornerstone of competitive Counter-Strike. Other additions will include new guns, grenades and changes to body armor and maps. The maps that the testers are being allowed to play include dust, aztec, inferno, nuke and train. The projected time period for the launch of the game will be in the first quarter of the 2012 fiscal year.

The Reddit author also suggests that there will not be a $1 million dollar tournament like Valve Software is doing with DotA 2, but nothing has been confirmed or denied by the game developer as of yet.

Other notes:

Air movement feels identical to CS: Source
Ladder movement feels the same as CS:S
Test servers are running tickrate33, so bunny hopping was inconsistent (presumably will be changed)
1-shot kills with any weapon other than Desert Eagle currently too difficult to achieve; testers stressed that it needs to be tweaked
Flashes are similar to 1.6; Smoke grenades similar to CS:S

Play-testing will resume on Friday.

I'm looking forward to this as well. I haven't played CS or CSS in a long time, but it's such a great game for just jumping in and out when you're bored.

First quarter of 2012 is pretty close, so they obviously don't plan on reinventing the wheel, and that's a good thing. What you posted hinted at them not wanting to change a lot, but fix errors and I think the close release date reflects that.

Yeah, woah! I wonder how much of a visual improvement it will be over the CS:Source version.

The rumour is currently that it's an updated version of the Source engine, so it's not a brand new engine from scratch. But I'm definitely wondering how it looks in comparison to current day games.

Should be an interesting next 12 hours

There's no doubt at all about that. I'd be surprised as hell if they announced a game AFTER another and released the latter first .

However... WHERE THE HECK IS HL3 ALREADY???

Well as you may - or may not - know, HL2:EP3 (I'm not sure if they are calling it HL3) is the final chapter in the trilogy, and so this means a story and game that brings HL2 to an end. That's a tall order, and I think what they are doing it making this a 'full game' and not just an 'episode'. For something like this they probably want a 'big finish'. Frankly, while it is one thing to just toss Gordon Freeman onto a train for the start of HL2, they won't be able to do that for the title that comes AFTER HL2:EP3. So they are probably thinking ahead.

What's funny is that a couple guys went to Valve's offices this past week to 'picket' in protest of the next installment. When Gabe Newell heard about it, he went out to see them and then bought them lunch. (pic at link)

Bet this will be as popular as condition zero and the main users will stick with cs:s and the hardcore fans with 1.5 or was it 1.6?

Fairly certain fans have been asking for ep3 and or hl3 and not another cs.

Yeah but to be fair, the lack of multiplayer for 'Half Life' (the game itself - not any of the mods based on the platform/engine) had really held it back. There was some generic multiplayer for the original Half Life that used the Freeman model, but it failed horribly.

So without multiplayer, where does the game go? There is no incentive anymore when you can make cash hand over fist with TF2 selling hats and junk.

I take offense to the article.
"Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO)."

If my memory serves me correctly, Valve didn't create Counter-Strike. It was a mod done outside of Valve. Value saw how awesome the mod was and how much everyone was playing it, so they 'bought' it.

you are correct, Valve is good at snatching up a good product/team.

Portal and L4D were the same deal.

That's true...but they also built it up and have continued to support it 100% for the past 6 years or so, which is why it's still the top played game on Steam today. Probably better off this way rather than being a hardly heard of mod that died off years ago I suppose. Just my opinion

I miss parts of you Stu, a lot.

I had to sign up a new SteamID. I don't play a whole lot of games on there. Mostly TF2 since it's gone F2P.
