ibanix join:2011-08-13 New Hartford, CT | [help] Frequent Connection Drops I'm getting intermittent connection drops of 5 to 10 seconds on my DSL line. It can happen as much as twice per minute. It also happens more frequently when DSL use is heavy.
I've verified that it's not at my local router, or LAN-side modem address, as continuous pings to those IPs never fail. A ping to the next hop beyond this - bras10-l0.mrdnct.sbcglobal.net [204.60.4.46] - will show packet loss.
See DSL connection information below.
Modem is a 2WIRE 1701HG with software version 3.17.5.

Is the connection drop accompanied by a loss of synch?
I have found that some hardware has trouble with heavy use. Netgear FR114P and Netgear FVS114 could not handle the number of peer connections opened by a BitTorrent client; I had to replace it with a D-Link DIR-655. Never lost synch, but lost reliable Internet access.
Plus, I have seen what seems like an inordinate number of AT&T DSL users having trouble with the 2Wire; enough so that I, personally, would avoid it. If you must have modem and router in a single unit, the Netopia 3347 sounds like a more reliable unit; for about the same price as the 2Wire, as sold by AT&T. Never mind that they pitch that modem to business customers; they will sell it to residential customers. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

I assume this means loss of synch?
DSL Line (Wire Pair): Searching for DSL signal
I also suspect the modem itself. I need to convince the account holder (which I am not) to get a new one... |
